Multi-stop Emilia-Romagna plans get easier with BLQ car hire

Landing at Bologna Guglielmo Marconi (BLQ) T1, all major rental desks sit together in the arrivals hall on the ground floor, a 3–5 minute walk from baggage claim. This setup works best if you’re hopping between spots like Modena, Parma, Ravenna, and hill towns that sit well away from the high-speed rail line. Office opening hours vary by brand, but most big names run roughly 07:00–23:00, with shorter hours on some Sundays and holidays.

Car pick-up is in the dedicated rental car parking area in P3, roughly 200–300 meters from the terminal via a signed path from arrivals. BLQ is just off the A14 autostrada, so you’re on the motorway toward Bologna, Modena, or Rimini in about 10–15 minutes once you exit the airport road. Expect standard Italian rental deposits on your credit card, often around €300–€1,000 depending on category and insurance package.

Daily rates swing a lot: in low season you might see €35–€50 per day for a small manual, while August and trade-fair weeks can push the same car above €80–€100. Automatics cost more and can sell out, so book at least 1–2 weeks ahead in summer or during big events at BolognaFiere. Most counters charge extra for drivers under 25 and for cross-border travel to countries like Slovenia or Croatia, which is buried in the contract fine print.

BLQ rentals usually cap free mileage at around 150–250 km per day on some cheaper deals, which matters if you’re stringing together Rimini, San Marino, and Ferrara in one loop. Many contracts require an extra fee if you drop the car at another airport, for example Florence (FLR) or Milan Linate (LIN), and that one-way charge can easily hit €80–€200. Fuel policy is often full-to-full, and missing that will add a marked-up per-liter rate that’s several euros higher than local stations along the A14.

If you land late, check your exact flight arrival against your provider’s desk hours, as not every company offers 24/7 service or out-of-hours key boxes. The airport sits inside a low-emission area near Bologna, so read up on ZTL zones in the city center before you follow the first tunnel or ring-road sign you see. One practical tip: take photos of the car from all sides in the P3 lot before you drive off, and keep the fuel receipt from the last station within 10 km of the airport for any deposit disputes.
