Gate-side bar in T1 with early pints and TVs
The Meriden Bar sits airside in Terminal 1 at Birmingham Airport, just past security and a short walk from the main departure gates. It opens early in the morning to catch the first wave of departures, so you can get a full English breakfast and a coffee or a pint before a 07:00 flight. Seating is mostly high tables and bar stools, with a few lower tables that work better if you’ve got a laptop or kids in tow.
Food is standard UK pub fare: burgers, fish and chips, and breakfast plates, with mains usually in the £12–£18 range. Expect the usual airport markup on drinks; a draught beer or glass of wine often lands in the £6–£8 bracket. Portions run on the generous side, so one main can be enough if you ate recently landside. If you’re tight on time before a 10:00 departure, stick to breakfast items or chips, which generally come out quicker than burgers.
The drinks list leans on well-known lagers, basic ales, and mainstream spirits rather than local craft curiosities. You’ll see the usual big-brand taps along the bar and a short list of house wines, plus simple long drinks like G&Ts and vodka mixers. Coffee is machine-based rather than barista-style, so think serviceable caffeine hit, not speciality brew. If you’ve got a 45-minute layover in T1, it’s realistic to sit down, order a drink, and keep one eye on the gate screens above the bar.
There’s no table service as such; you order and pay at the bar, then carry drinks and cutlery back yourself. That helps if you’re watching a specific boarding time, since you control when you queue. Power outlets are limited, so don’t bank on a full recharge before a 09:30 short-haul. One tip: grab a printed receipt at the till, since some airlines at BHX still like to see time-stamped spend slips if they’re questioning early gate arrivals.
