Duty Free

Prices here run duty-free, but it’s not always cheaper

Today Duty Free sits airside in Amsterdam Schiphol (after security), right in the main passenger flow between the piers, so you’ll almost certainly walk past it on a Schengen or non‑Schengen connection. It’s the big walk-through shop with stacked shelves of liquor, perfume, and chocolate that you hit soon after passport control on many long-haul routes.

Liquor is the main draw: you’ll see 1L bottles of standard whisky, gin, and vodka running around €18–€30, with promo twin‑packs often under €40. Tobacco and rolling papers sit in a separate, clearly signed section. If you want something to drink on arrival, canned and mini‑bottled spirits sit near the tills, usually under €7.

Cosmetics and fragrance brands dominate the middle of the floor, with big counters from names like Chanel, Dior, and Lancôme. Expect airport pricing: sometimes 10–20% below downtown Netherlands prices, sometimes identical once you do the math on milliliters. Staff push gift sets heavily, especially in the €50–€100 range around holidays.

Food is mostly box chocolate and Dutch souvenirs: stroopwafels, nougat, and tulip-marked tins starting around €4–€6, plus big mixed chocolate gift boxes in the €10–€20 band. Don’t expect fresh food; this is candy, biscuits, and vacuum‑packed cheese at best, not a place for a proper snack before your 14:00 departure.

Tip: Snap a quick photo of shelf tags and compare in your home currency before dropping €80 on perfume or whisky; Schiphol “duty free” isn’t automatically a deal.
