Gate-side books, mags and snacks without leaving the secure area
AKO sits post-security at Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) as one of the main Dutch newsstands, so you’ll pass at least one branch walking between Schengen gates. Shelves lean hard on Dutch titles, but you still get plenty of English bestsellers, newspapers and travel guides alongside last‑minute stationery and snacks.
Most paperbacks run around €12–€18, with magazines in the €5–€10 range, so prices feel like typical airport markup rather than a shock. You can also grab bottled drinks, basic sweets and chocolate bars in the €2–€4 band, useful if you skipped the supermarket before security. It’s all grab-and-go; no seating, just quick in-and-out.
Hours vary by location, but core branches on the main piers generally open from early morning into late evening, matching peak bank departure times around 06:00–22:00. Smaller units near quieter gates may shut earlier, so don’t bank on a 23:00 magazine run if you’re out on a remote pier.
Selection leans Europe-heavy: expect strong coverage of Dutch and wider EU news, plus local city guides for Amsterdam and other Dutch towns. If you want niche US papers or very specific international editions, you’ll likely strike out here and at the other Schiphol newsstands too.
Tip: if you care about choice, stop at an AKO in the central post-security shopping area right after security rather than waiting for the smaller branches closer to the outlying gates.
