Short stay

Up to 14 hours free makes AEY parking basically day-trip friendly

Short Stay Parking at Akureyri Airport sits right next to the Main terminal, about a 1 minute walk from the front door. There’s only one physical lot for the whole airport, so “short stay” just means how long you leave the car, not a separate area. A TripAdvisor poster mentioned they simply left their rental outside the small terminal with no prebooking and had no issues.

The key rule: the first 14 hours are free. After that, the airport’s tariff kicks in at roughly ISK 1,750 per day up to 7 days, then drops to about ISK 1,350 per day after 7 days and ISK 1,200 per day after 14 days. The ISK 2,000 “daily” rate you’ll sometimes see is a rounded figure, but if you run over your same‑day window you’re billed on that stepped scale.

Autopay cameras handle everything: your plate is scanned at entry and exit, so there’s no ticket, gate token, or cash machine. You then have 48 hours after leaving to pay online through the Autopay smart app, the Autopay website, or the Parka app. Miss that 48‑hour window and Autopay adds a 1,490 ISK service fee and pushes an invoice to your online bank.

Locals lean hard on that 14‑hour free block for same‑day Reykjavík runs, aiming for morning out / evening back so their car never triggers a charge. Frequent users also pre‑register their license plate in Autopay so fees (if any) charge automatically on exit, which removes the risk of forgetting to log in and pay within those 48 hours.

Tip: Set a reminder on your phone tied to your scheduled landing time at AEY; if a delay pushes you past 14 hours, you’ll at least remember to pay within the 48‑hour window and skip the 1,490 ISK penalty.
