$19 vs $40 Parking: When San Jose Airport (SJC) Quietly Beats SFO for Bay Area Drivers

For Bay Area flyers who own a car or Priority Pass, a data-first look at when Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International (SJC) is strictly better than San Francisco International (SFO) on parking, lounges, and transit.

By Sloan Marchetti · · 8 min read

If you park on airport, SJC starts at $19/day in Economy Lot 1. SFO starts at $40/day in Domestic Parking. On a 5 day trip, that is $95 versus $200 before you touch airfare or tolls.

From a revenue perspective, that gap is not a rounding error. It is the entire reason a “secondary” airport can be the rational choice even if the big hub has more flights, more lounges, and more noise.

I spent nine years in revenue management at Virgin America watching Bay Area flyers behave as if SFO was the only real airport. The demand curve told a different story.

This piece is intentionally narrow. I am talking to two groups:

  1. South Bay drivers with lounge access (Priority Pass or airline club).
  2. SF / northern Peninsula flyers who occasionally park for 5–7+ day trips.

Everyone else is mostly arguing corner cases.

The key numbers: SJC vs SFO for drivers

First, the hard data that matters for these two groups.

SJC vs SFO parking: $19 vs $40 anchors

SJC gives you 12 catalogued parking lots. SFO gives you 8. The meaningful contrast is the bottom of the ladder and how far you walk for that rate.

Cheapest official daily rates

Shortest catalogued walk times

Pattern: SFO can put you almost on top of the terminal if you pay for it. SJC asks you to walk more, but its price floor is dramatically lower.

For concrete trips:

  • 3 days

    • SJC Economy: $19 × 3 = $57
    • SJC Hourly 2: $25 × 3 = $75
    • SFO Domestic: $40 × 3 = $120
  • 5 days

    • SJC Economy: $19 × 5 = $95
    • SFO Domestic: $40 × 5 = $200
  • 7 days

    • SJC Economy: $19 × 7 = $133
    • SFO Domestic: $40 × 7 = $280

On each of those trips, you are buying the same thing (on-airport parking with a walk to the terminal) for a $45–$147 premium at SFO.

SJC vs SFO lounges: coverage vs scale

On lounges, SFO has more total options, but SJC covers the key use cases efficiently.

SFO pairs its 12 lounges with 4 terminals and 119 gates (Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Terminal 2, Terminal 3, Dianne Feinstein International). SJC puts 8 lounges in a footprint of 2 terminals.

Wait, I used to overweight SFO’s lounge count myself. For a domestic heavy, South Bay-based traveler with Priority Pass or airline status, SJC’s coverage in a small layout often matches what you actually use.

Cheapest transit if you occasionally skip parking

For both personas I care about here, parking is the primary lever. But on some trips you will leave the car at home, so the floor transit options matter.

  • From / to SJC:

    • VTA Route 60: $2.50, about 20–25 minutes SJC–Berryessa BART, 15–20 minutes SJC–Santa Clara Caltrain when connections work.
    • VTA Light Rail Blue Line: $2.50, around 20–30 minutes Metro/Airport–downtown San Jose, plus the airport transfer.
    • Caltrain: $3.75–$8.25 typical adult 2–4 zone fares, with a catalogued ~60–75 minutes SJC–downtown SF via Route 60 + Caltrain if transfers are reasonable.
    • BART Berryessa Extension Connection: $2.50 VTA + about $6–8 BART to downtown SF, ~60–75 minutes total.
  • From / to SFO:

    • SamTrans: $2–3 local fares, with rider reports of up to 60–90 minutes SFO–downtown SF.
    • BART: $10–11 one way SFO–central SF, about 30 minutes in train, 35–40 minutes including AirTrain and wait.

If you care about absolute cheapest from San Jose into SF without parking, SJC + VTA + Caltrain/BART and SFO + SamTrans land in similar cost territory. SFO’s direct BART hit is simpler, SJC’s transit is cheaper to downtown San Jose.

Persona 1: South Bay driver with lounge access

Lens one is tight: you live in San Jose, Santa Clara, Cupertino, or Sunnyvale. You normally drive, and you have either:

  • Priority Pass, or
  • An airline club membership / status that gets you into Delta / AA / United lounges.

You are not price-insensitive, but you care about comfort.

Parking math that actually matters

Use a 3 day and 5 day domestic trip, since that is what most business and short leisure looks like.

3 day trip (long weekend or quick work run)

Parking premium to choose SFO:

  • Versus SJC Economy: $63
  • Versus SJC Hourly 2: $45

5 day trip (typical Monday–Friday)

  • SJC Economy: $19 × 5 = $95
  • SFO Domestic: $40 × 5 = $200

Parking premium to choose SFO:

  • Versus SJC Economy: $105

Those are real numbers. If your airfare difference is $20 and you are comparing a South Bay drive to SJC plus a short terminal walk vs a longer drive to SFO plus a slightly shorter garage walk, the decision is not subtle.

Lounge coverage for this persona

At SJC, your lounge experience is concentrated but practical:

At SFO, you gain:

  • The Centurion Lounge in Terminal 2 if you carry Amex Platinum.
  • A broader set of airline and alliance lounges, especially for long haul out of the international terminal.

But your domestic pre-flight behavior is often “arrive, clear security, grab a snack and wifi, board.” SJC checks that box with less walking inside the airport and a cheaper parking bill outside it.

Decision checklist for Persona 1

For a South Bay driver with lounge access, use this simple sequence:

  1. Is the route offered from SJC at all?
    • If no, you are at SFO and this whole exercise is moot.
  2. Trip length and parking choice:
    • 3 days:
      • SJC Economy: $57
      • SFO Domestic: $120
    • 5 days:
      • SJC Economy: $95
      • SFO Domestic: $200
  3. Airfare difference SFO vs SJC:
    • If SFO is ≤ $40 cheaper than SJC:
      • On a 3 day trip, SJC still wins on total out-of-pocket (you save $63 on parking and give up at most $40 in fare).
    • If SFO is ≤ $80 cheaper on a 5 day trip:
      • You are still roughly break-even after that $105 parking delta.
  4. Schedule value:
    • Is there a material schedule advantage from SFO (early first departure, last arrival, non-stop vs 1-stop) that is worth an extra hour of round-trip driving plus the cash?

Concrete example

You are flying SJC–SEA vs SFO–SEA, 3 days:

  • SJC fare: $250, park in Economy for $57, total $307.
  • SFO fare: $220, park in Domestic for $120, total $340.

Even though SFO is $30 cheaper on paper, your all-in cost is $33 higher once you attach the parking line item, and your drive from the South Bay is longer.

Rule of thumb, cleaned up

For this persona:

Default to SJC if you are driving and paying for on-airport parking. Only move to SFO if:

  • SFO’s ticket is at least $60 cheaper for a 3 day trip or $100 cheaper for a 5 day trip, or
  • The SFO schedule meaningfully changes your workday or connection quality.

The extra lounge variety at SFO is rarely worth more than that.

Persona 2: SF / northern Peninsula, 5–7+ day parking trips

Persona two is different. You live in San Francisco, Daly City, maybe San Bruno. Most of the year you do not park:

  • You use BART to SFO for $10–11 each way and 35–40 minutes.
  • Or you use SamTrans for $2–3 and accept up to 60–90 minutes runtime.

For routine 1–4 day business trips, SFO is your obvious answer. The interesting edge case is when you decide to drive and park for a longer vacation.

Long-trip parking: where SJC suddenly competes

Run the 7 day numbers again, this time from your point of view:

Parking-only savings with SJC: $147 on a single trip.

You will have a longer drive from SF to SJC than to SFO. There is no argument there. But your incremental cost is gas and time. The parking line item is a hard, posted number.

Actually, the same story holds at 5 days:

  • SFO Domestic: $40 × 5 = $200
  • SJC Economy: $19 × 5 = $95
  • Savings: $105

For this persona, the question is not “Do I permanently switch to SJC?” It is “On the few trips a year where I park for a week, do I accept a longer drive to save around a hundred bucks?”

Transit when you do not park

When you are back in non-parking mode:

  • To SFO from SF:

    • BART: $10–11, about 35–40 minutes station to terminal including AirTrain.
    • SamTrans: $2–3, up to 60–90 minutes.
  • To SJC from SF:

Here SFO stays your default. The only time SJC comes into frame is when parking cost dominates.
