PWM for Maine drivers: 12 parking lots, $2 buses, and when to skip the garage

Portland International Jetport (PWM) looks like a small-city airport on the map. Two passenger terminals feeding a Main Terminal with 11 gates. The part that is not small is the curb and parking. You get 12 catalogued parking lots, daily rates from $10/day to $48/day, a $2 bus into downtown, plus regional shuttles that run $20–$60 into the rest of Maine.

This is not about downtown Portland locals picking between their bike and METRO Bus Route 5. This is for the people who actually drive to PWM:

• South from Biddeford and Saco
• North from Brunswick and Freeport
• Inland from ski country, Lewiston, Auburn, the lakes

If you are coming in on I‑95 or Route 302 with a car full of gear, your choice is not “bus vs walkable garage.” It is “how many days am I gone, is anyone with me, and is it worth trading a shuttle or long walk for the extra daily cost.”

Last autumn I rebuilt our PWM rules for my engineers who were bouncing between field sites in Maine and short flights out of Portland. The pattern that shook out is simple: start with trip length, then layer on where you live and who is in the car. PWM’s own numbers do the rest.

The only numbers that matter if you drive in

You can ignore a lot of noise if you hold on to a few anchors from the PWM database.

Parking prices

• Cheapest daily parking at PWM: $10/day in the Pink Lot Offsite Parking
• On airport long term:
  • Long-Term Parking – Green Lot: $15/day
  • Long-Term Parking – Blue Lot Surface: $15/day
  • Parking Garage – Blue, Purple, Red, Orange, Yellow Levels: $15/day
  • Specific entries like Level 4 Orange Lot, Level 3 Red Lot, Level 5 Yellow Lot all sit at $15/day
• Short term hourly:
  • Hourly/Short-Term Parking – Blue Lot Garage and Level 1 Blue Lot Short Term at $48/day, $2/hour, first hour free

PWM has 12 catalogued parking products, but for drivers from outside the city it really collapses into:

• $10/day Pink, offsite with shuttle
• $15/day long term, walkable, various colors
• $48/day short term, hourly, use sparingly

Ground transport backstops

• METRO Bus Route 5 to Downtown Portland

  • Mode: Bus
  • Cost: $2 each way
  • Time: 15–25 minutes to downtown

• App-based Rideshare Pickup (Uber/Lyft)

  • Mode: Rideshare
  • Cost: $12–$25 each way
  • Time: 10–15 minutes to downtown

• Taxi from Baggage Claim Taxi Stand

  • Mode: Taxi
  • Cost: $15–$25 each way
  • Time: 10–15 minutes to downtown

• Regional Courtesy Shuttle / Ground Transportation Vans

  • Mode: Shuttle
  • Cost: $20–$60 depending on destination
  • Time: 30–90 minutes to regional destinations

If you live downtown and travel light, Route 5 at $2 each way is hard to beat. If you live in Brunswick, Biddeford, or Bethel, the real question is how car, parking, and those regional shuttles interact for the specific trip you are on.

Trip-length rules for people who drive to PWM

I manage travel with matrices, not vibes. Use this ladder and plug in your origin.

0–1 hour total at PWM (pickups, drop-offs, quick errands)

Origin: anywhere, trip: no flight.

• Use:

  • Free cell phone lot, wait on the “I am outside” text, pull to curb, leave, cost $0
  • Or, if you want to walk in, park in Hourly/Short-Term Parking – Blue Lot Garage, stay under an hour at $0–$2

• Do not:

  • Pay $10–$15/day just to stand at arrivals
  • Drift into long term because the sign looked easy

Hourly Blue is a tool, not a habit. Use it surgically and you never see that $48/day cap.

Same day or 1 night trip

Think early out, late back next day, light bag.

From downtown Portland or along Route 5

• Best move:
  • METRO Bus Route 5 at $2 each way, total $4
• Upgrade to car or rideshare if:
  • Very early or very late flights
  • Nasty winter weather
  • You are hauling samples, tools, or big luggage

From Biddeford / Saco / Scarborough

• You are already in the car for 20–40 minutes.
• Round trip parking at $15/day: $15–$30
• A rideshare from those suburbs is usually going to land above the $12–$25 downtown band each way once distance and time are in the mix.

My call:

• One day out and back, solo: park on airport in a $15/day long term lot. Total $15.
• One overnight: long term at $30 is usually more predictable and often cheaper than two longer-distance rideshares plus the risk of surge.

The $10/day Pink Lot Offsite Parking is only a small win on a 1 day trip. At that point you are trading maybe $5 for waiting on a shuttle with your laptop bag. I do not bother.

From Brunswick / Freeport / Lewiston / Auburn

• You are deep enough that rideshare is functionally off the table from a cost standpoint for routine corporate trips.
• Same rule: for 1 day or 1 night, drive yourself and park long term on airport at $15/day.

Here the decision is not “bus vs lot.” It is “which $15/day product is easiest to walk from when you come back tired.”

2–4 nights (long weekends, short field rotations, ski runs)

This is PWM’s real sweet spot for Maine drivers.

Parking math first:

• Pink Lot at $10/day

  • 2 nights (3 calendar days): $30
  • 3 nights (4 calendar days): $40

• Long term on airport at $15/day

  • 2 nights (3 days): $45
  • 3 nights (4 days): $60

From Portland, South Portland, Westbrook suburbs

• Light traveler, near Route 5:
  • Bus both ways at $4 total still competes nicely up through a 3 or 4 night trip.
• Family of four with bags:
  • Four bus fares each way stack quickly. At that point, long term at $45–$60 for the car starts looking cleaner than eight or more individual tickets plus transfers.

From Biddeford / Saco / Old Orchard

• Two adults, ski gear, 3–4 nights:
  • I would drive in and park.
  • If money is tight and you do not mind a shuttle, use Pink Lot Offsite Parking at $10/day for $30–$40 total.
  • If you want a simple walk straight to the Main Terminal, pay $15/day in Green, Blue surface, or a garage color level for $45–$60.

From Brunswick / Freeport / inland towns

• Your drive-to-airport cost in time is higher, which makes every extra connection more painful.
• For my engineers out of those areas, I set the default for 2–4 night trips as:
  • “Drive, park on airport at $15/day, unless you are really cost sensitive, then Pink at $10/day.”

Actually, I pushed a couple of people toward Pink by default when budgets were tight, then listened to the feedback about late night shuttles with cold gear. Most shifted themselves back to $15/day to be able to just walk to their car.

5–7 nights (full work week, longer vacations)

This is where the $5/day spread between Pink and long term does real work.

Numbers:

• Pink Lot at $10/day

  • 5 days: $50
  • 7 days: $70

• Long term at $15/day

  • 5 days: $75
  • 7 days: $105

From anywhere you realistically drive from in Maine

• Rideshare or taxi: even if we anchor it to the lower $12–$25 each way downtown range, you are staring at $24–$50 minimum, often more once you factor in distance from outlying areas. Over a whole week, that keeps pace with or beats on‑airport long term, but Pink at $50–$70 total usually wins for the cost-sensitive traveler who is already in a car.

My rule set for weeklong trips:

• Solo, budget-first, has patience for shuttles:
  • Use Pink Lot Offsite Parking. That $25–$35 you save against long term is real money at per-diem level.
• Family or group, heavy gear, high “we are wiped out” factor:
  • Pay for a $15/day lot. The extra $25–$35 across the week is the tax on walking straight to your car in rain or snow.
• If you happen to live on Route 5 and are a light packer:
  • A week of bus rides at $4 round trip is still absurdly cheap. It just is not realistic for most regional drivers.

How regional shuttles and hotels change the math

Not everyone driving in is parking in their own driveway the night before.

From our PWM transport data, the Hotel and Off-Airport Parking Shuttles and Regional Courtesy Shuttle / Ground Transportation Vans create two more patterns.

Park once at a hotel, not at PWM

If you are driving in from farther out, staying near the airport the night before a very early flight:

• Many airport hotels run their own shuttles at $0–$10, usually complimentary for guests.
• Some offer park‑sleep‑fly packages that, once you add the nightly room rate you already need, can undercut the straight math of $10–$15/day at PWM.

For a 5–7 night trip coming in from ski country or northern Maine, that can look like:

• One hotel night you needed anyway
• Parking bundled or discounted
• Shuttle to PWM in the morning

I compare that all-in cost to:

• Pink at $50–$70, or
• Long term at $75–$105

If the hotel package plus shuttle is under either number and fits your sleep plan, use it and skip the airport lots entirely.

Regional shuttles instead of driving your own car

Those Regional Courtesy Shuttle / Ground Transportation Vans cost $20–$60 depending on destination and run 30–90 minutes.

For solo travelers from places like Bethel or farther up the coast, a one-way shuttle around $40–$60 can actually be smart for a weeklong trip if:

• You do not want your car buried in snow for 7 days
• You do not want to deal with the return drive at midnight

Quick sense check for a 7 day trip:

• Pink Lot parking: $70
• Long term: $105
• Two regional shuttle legs at $40–$60 each: $80–$120

That is close enough that comfort, weather, and car wear matter as much as pure dollars. For my team, I usually keep shuttles in play for winter weeklongs if the origin is in that 30–90 minute radius of PWM and they would otherwise be driving solo.

PWM’s 12 lots, simplified for non-locals

If you only see PWM a few times a year, all those colors can feel like a trap. Here is the clean mental model I use for my own people flying out of Maine.

Think of it as three products, not twelve:

1. $10/day Pink Lot

   • Off airport, shuttle in
   • Shows up in the data twice (daily and hourly), do not let that confuse you
   • Use for: budget-first 3+ day trips where a shuttle is fine

2. $15/day long term, all the colors

   • Green Lot, Blue surface, garage color levels like Level 4 Orange Lot, Level 3 Red, Level 5 Yellow
   • All the same daily rate: $15/day
   • Main variable is walk quality and covered vs open-air

3. Short term Blue, hourly

   • Hourly/Short-Term Parking – Blue Lot Garage and Level 1 Blue Lot Short Term
   • First hour free, then $2/hour, capped at $48/day
   • Correct use case: under an hour for pickups, drop-offs, and quick errands
   • Wrong use case: leaving your car for even one full night

If you are driving in from outside Portland, do not obsess over which color garage section you get. Decide:

• Shuttle vs walk
• $10 vs $15 per day
• Under an hour vs everything longer

Once you frame it that way, PWM stops being a maze of Blue and Green and becomes three simple price points plus a $2 bus for the few who can actually use it.

The line I put at the top of our internal PWM note now is the same one I would hand you: “How many calendar days is your car at the airport, and how much per day would you honestly pay to avoid a shuttle.” Answer that, then pick one of four boxes: $10 Pink, $15 long term, short term Blue for under an hour, or no parking at all because a shuttle or Route 5 makes more sense where you live.
