Meter starts at the terminal curb at both Domestic and International

Checker Cabs runs from the public taxi ranks right outside the arrivals level at Calgary International’s Domestic and International terminals. You don’t book ahead; you walk out, follow the “Taxi” signs, and join the official queue. Dispatchers in yellow vests feed cars forward, so you don’t deal with random curbside solicitations.

From YYC to downtown Calgary, most Checker Cabs rides land in the CAD $45–$50 range under normal traffic, with the legal meter running by distance and time. The airport adds a standard departure fee to every taxi trip, already baked into the final metered fare. You pay the driver directly, and tipping around 10–15% is the local norm on a $50 ride.

Checker Cabs operates 24/7 citywide, so grabbing a car at 05:30 before a Domestic departure or at 23:30 off a late International arrival is not a problem most days. During heavy snow or big events at the Saddledome, the line at the terminal can stretch to 20–30 minutes, especially in the evening rush from about 16:00 to 19:00. Build the buffer.

Cabs queue on Arrivals, not Departures, with separate signed areas for Domestic and International passengers. If you land in International and see a long line, it can be faster sometimes to walk 4–5 minutes indoors toward Domestic arrivals and check that taxi rank instead. Same Checker fleet, same meter, just a different queue length.

Most Checker Cabs sedans can handle two checked suitcases plus two carry-ons in the trunk and rear footwells; with skis or snowboards from a Banff trip you may need a larger van, which costs the same meter but is subject to availability in the line. Child seats are not standard in airport taxis, so families needing proper restraints should bring their own or pre-arrange a ride elsewhere.

For payment, most Checker Cabs drivers at YYC accept major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard on a mobile terminal, but the connection can be spotty in underground hotel drop-offs, so keeping a backup CAD $20–$40 in cash helps. If the card machine “isn’t working,” you can insist they try again; the meter is regulated by the city and the fare does not change based on payment type.

  • Step 1: After landing at YYC, follow “Baggage Claim” to Arrivals.
  • Step 2: Collect bags, then follow yellow “Taxis” signs toward the exit doors.
  • Step 3: Join the official taxi queue at Domestic or International, whichever you exit from.
  • Step 4: Tell the dispatcher you want Checker Cabs and your destination (e.g., downtown hotel or specific address).
  • Step 5: Load bags, check the meter starts at the regulated base fare, then confirm the driver knows your route.
  • Step 6: On arrival, pay the metered fare plus tip by cash or card and ask for a receipt with the cab number.

One last tip: screenshot your hotel or address with postal code (like T2P or T3H) before leaving the terminal; it speeds up the trip and avoids meter-running detours while the driver tries to clarify where you’re headed.
