Rail connection

20–35 minutes from TSA gets you to Taiwan’s HSR grid

If you’re flying into Taipei Songshan (T1 or T2) and then heading to cities like Taichung, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, you’ll first ride the Taipei Metro to reach the High-Speed Rail at Taipei HSR Station or Nangang HSR Station. Both HSR stations sit on the same north–south bullet train line, with departures every 10–20 minutes in daytime hours. This is a rail-to-rail connection, not an on-airport train.

From TSA, the airport connects directly to the Wenhu (Brown) MRT Line at Songshan Airport Station, and the ride to Nangang Exhibition Center (BR24) at the east end of the line takes around 17 minutes with no transfer. From there, you change to the Bannan (Blue) Line toward Taipei Main or Nangang HSR; total airport-to-HSR travel time usually lands around 25–35 minutes if you just missed a train.

To reach Taipei HSR Station, ride the Brown Line from Songshan Airport and transfer to the Blue Line at either Zhongxiao Fuxing (BR10/BL15) or Nanjing Fuxing (BR11/G16), then continue to Taipei Main Station (BL12). Taipei Main is the bigger hub: more food, more shops, and more HSR departures, especially in the evening peak around 18:00–20:00. Follow signs for “HSR” once you surface inside the complex.

To reach Nangang HSR Station, stay on the Blue Line past Taipei Main to Nangang (BL23). Some travelers prefer Nangang because the station layout is simpler and HSR platforms sit directly above the metro, which trims transfer walking to about 5–10 minutes. HSR trains that start at Nangang give you a better shot at open luggage rack space and empty aisle seats, especially on busy Friday nights.

Tickets for Taiwan High-Speed Rail can be bought at station counters or vending machines at both Taipei and Nangang HSR stations, with standard adult fares from Taipei to Taichung usually around NT$700–800. You can also use reserved seat tickets on specific departures or stand in the non-reserved cars (typically cars 10–12) if you want flexibility. Build at least a 60–75 minute buffer between your scheduled TSA landing time and your chosen HSR departure to cover immigration, bags, metro, and a quick snack.

One practical tip: when you land at TSA, buy or top up an EasyCard or iPASS at the airport metro station so you don’t waste time in ticket lines at Taipei Main or Nangang; tapping in and out on both legs of the metro hop usually cuts 5–10 minutes off the transfer dance.
