Tram

Tram 15-20 min from airport to Hobujaama/Viru area under normal traffic €1.50 for a single ride QR ticket; up to €2.00 if bought from driver or as a single paper ticket

€1.50 into central Tallinn in under 20 minutes

Tram 4 runs from T1 at Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport straight to the Hobujaama/Viru area in about 15–20 minutes under normal traffic, making it the go-to option for most visitors heading to Old Town or the city center. The stop is directly outside arrivals, so you walk maybe 50–100 meters from the terminal doors and you’re on the platform.

A single ride costs €1.50 with a QR ticket on your phone, or up to €2.00 if you buy from the driver or as a paper ticket. Trams run roughly every 7–10 minutes in daytime, then thin out into the late evening and stop entirely overnight, so this suits daytime and evening flyers more than 01:00 arrivals.

Ride time is usually 15–20 minutes to Hobujaama or Viru, but commuters report it can push to around 25 minutes at peak hours when every stop is busy. The tram itself is modern, has clear audio announcements, and locals often tell visitors it is easier than trying to figure out the bus network on a first visit.

Buy a QR ticket before you board using the official system or an app, then validate on the tram’s on-board reader as soon as you step in; there are no turnstiles on the T1 platform. If you prefer, you can pay up to €2.00 in cash or contactless to the driver, but that slows boarding during the 07:30–09:00 rush.

The two airport platforms are slightly offset: inbound trams to the city and outbound trams back to the airport do not line up perfectly, and first-timers sometimes stand on the wrong side and watch their tram depart 20 meters away. Check the electronic sign for “4 Lennujaam” (airport) when returning, and “4 Tondi” when heading into town.

Regulars ride to Hobujaama or Viru, then walk 5–10 minutes into the Old Town streets instead of trying to get dropped at a specific hotel door. With luggage, many people position themselves near the articulated middle section where there is more standing room for suitcases during busy 16:00–18:00 after-work runs.

Trams can get quite full in rush hour, and it is common to stand the whole 15–20 minute ride with a large suitcase, especially between the airport and Ülemiste stops. Late arrivals who miss the final departure for the night usually end up in a taxi queue outside T1, paying several times the €1.50–€2.00 tram fare.

Step-by-step: using Tram 4 from T1

  • 1. Exit arrivals at T1 and walk about 50–100 meters to the marked “Lennujaam” tram stop.
  • 2. Buy a €1.50 QR ticket on your phone, or have up to €2.00 ready if you plan to pay the driver.
  • 3. Check the platform sign and stand on the side for tram 4 Tondi when going into the city.
  • 4. Board when Tram 4 arrives (every 7–10 minutes in daytime), then immediately validate your QR or contactless card on the on-board reader.
  • 5. Ride 15–20 minutes to Hobujaama or Viru, watching the stop displays and announcements in Estonian and English.
  • 6. Get off, then walk 5–10 minutes into Tallinn Old Town or to most central hotels.
  • 7. For the return, use the offset platform signed for 4 Lennujaam and allow up to 25 minutes in case of peak-hour delays.

One practical tip: screenshot your QR ticket and directions to Hobujaama/Viru on Wi‑Fi at T1 so you are not dependent on mobile data once you step onto the platform.
