Shared shuttle

90–120 minutes from SMR T1 to Palomino by shared van

Intercity Vans to Palomino run as shared shuttles from Simón Bolívar International Airport’s T1, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to reach town, depending on traffic on the Troncal del Caribe highway. These are road transfers only, so plan your flight arrival with at least a 30-minute buffer to find the van, load bags, and sort payment before departure.

The vans operate directly from outside Terminal 1, so you are landside as soon as you exit baggage claim and customs. Look for signage or staff indicating shared shuttles to Palomino and other coastal towns; most services group passengers by direction to keep travel time close to the 90–120 minute estimate. If you land late at night, confirm on arrival that a shared shuttle is still running on your route.

Pricing is per seat, not per vehicle, so you share costs with other passengers headed along the same Santa Marta–Palomino corridor. Expect the per-person fare to be higher than the public bus but lower than a private taxi for the full 70–80 km stretch. Have small Colombian peso bills ready, as card payment is often unreliable or not accepted at all.

Boarding usually happens once a minimum number of seats are filled, so a van might wait 10–30 minutes before departure if you are the first from a newly arrived flight. Luggage typically rides in the back or in a small roof compartment; confirm with the driver that larger backpacks and hard cases are secured before the van leaves T1. Keep your smaller valuables with you in the cabin instead of in the rear storage.

These shuttles run point-to-point, with drop-offs along the main road near Palomino’s beach access streets, not inside hotel properties. Tell the driver your hostel or hotel name when boarding so they can suggest the closest roadside stop along the highway. If you arrive after 20:00, factor in a 5–10 minute walk from the highway to many accommodations on dark, uneven streets.

Practical tip: land with at least 20,000–30,000 COP in cash specifically set aside for the shuttle seat and a small buffer for water or snacks, so you are not searching for an ATM in T1 while the van is ready to leave.
