The Public Bus Service from Simón Bolívar International Airport (T1) runs between the terminal and central Santa Marta in about 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic along the coastal road. Buses are standard city buses, not airport shuttles, so expect basic seating and frequent stops along the way before reaching downtown.

Buses depart from just outside the T1 arrivals area, on the road in front of the terminal where taxis also line up, and you usually see a bus marked for Santa Marta every 15–30 minutes in daytime. This is an ordinary local route, so there is no dedicated ticket booth inside the airport; you simply board at the curb and pay the driver directly in cash.

Fares on the Public Bus Service are low compared with taxis, typically a fraction of the cab price for the 16–18 km trip into Santa Marta from SMR. Payment is taken on board, usually in Colombian pesos, so having small bills ready speeds things up and avoids delays while the driver makes change in front of a full bus.

Journey time of 60–90 minutes comes from the bus stopping repeatedly along the coastal strip between SMR and the main city areas like El Rodadero and central Santa Marta. In lighter traffic closer to midday you may see closer to 60 minutes, but in late afternoon peaks or holiday periods the same route can push toward 90 minutes.

The Public Bus Service is useful if you land in T1 with more time than money and luggage you can manage on your lap or in the aisle for 60–90 minutes. If your arrival or departure is tight, the slower speed and extra stops compared with taxis can be a real factor on this stretch of road.

Practical tip: if your flight from T1 lands after dark or you cut it close to a late check-in time in Santa Marta, skip the Public Bus Service and budget for a taxi instead, since the bus can still take up to 90 minutes at night.
