Gate 5 upstairs, this is SJO’s main Amex/PP holding pen
Up one level by Gate 5 in Terminal A, VIP Santamaría runs 4:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily and pulls in almost everyone holding Amex Platinum, Visa Airport Companion, or Priority Pass. It’s the de facto club for AA, Delta, and other early U.S.-bound flights because there’s no Admirals Club or oneworld lounge anywhere in SJO.
The lounge sits airside after security, a short walk from gates 4–6, above the concourse shops. Don’t mix it up with the basement Priority Pass space across from Gate 5 or the BAC lounge near Gate 17 in Terminal B; this one is the “upstairs at Gate 5” spot tied to Amex and global passes. Day passes run about $33.90 if you’re walking up without a card.
Food runs basic buffet style, with breakfast starting around 4:30 a.m. and shifting to snacks later in the day. Reviews call out powdered eggs and rice as the core morning spread, with limited hot options overall. Think small sandwiches, chips, and a few pastries rather than a full meal; you won’t replace a sit-down restaurant, but you can skip buying an airport muffin.
Drinks include soft drinks, coffee, tea, and a short list of complimentary local beer and house spirits, with some premium alcohol at extra cost per the Amex listing. Self-pour setups appear on the counter, and staff pass through every 15–20 minutes to clear plates. Power outlets line several wall seats, but not every chair has one, so charge up as soon as you grab a spot.
Space is tight: multiple TripAdvisor reviews describe the room as small and crowded, especially between 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and again before evening U.S. bank departures around 4:00–7:00 p.m. Once the seats by the windows fill, people end up along interior walls or at bar-height perches near the buffet. Expect a queue at the front desk when two or more widebodies are boarding.
Regulars with Amex Platinum or Priority Pass use this lounge mainly as a quieter-than-gate waiting room before AA and other U.S. flights, often timing arrivals to about 60–90 minutes before boarding to avoid the worst crowds. Flyers with local BAC cards tend to skip it and walk to the BAC lounge by Gate 17 instead, keeping this one a bit more international-card heavy.
Bottom line tip: with an early AA departure out of Terminal A, clear security by 4:45 a.m., head straight upstairs at Gate 5, and grab a corner seat before the 5:30 a.m. rush hits.
