Metro Line 10

Metro

Metro 25-35 min Hongqiao – Xintiandi (metro riding time) ¥3-6

¥3–6 gets you from Hongqiao to Xintiandi in about 30 minutes

Metro Line 10 is the straight shot from Shanghai Hongqiao to Xintiandi, the former French Concession, and Yuyuan Garden, with a metro riding time of roughly 25–35 minutes between Hongqiao and Xintiandi. Trains usually run from around 05:45 to 23:00, with gaps of about 3–8 minutes in the daytime.

There are two Line 10 stops in the Hongqiao area: Hongqiao Airport Terminal 1 and Hongqiao Railway Station, but only T1 sits directly on the line. From T2, you need about 10–15 extra minutes to walk or take the internal shuttle over to the Line 10 station at T1 or the railway station.

Fares are distance-based and cheap: expect roughly ¥3–6 per person from Hongqiao to central spots like Xintiandi, Yuyuan Garden, or South Shaanxi Road in the French Concession. At peak times, locals say Line 10 feels slightly less crushed than Line 2, which helps if you have a suitcase or backpack.

Service runs roughly every 3–5 minutes in the daytime, but after about 22:00 headways stretch closer to 8–10 minutes. The line shuts around 23:00, so if your domestic flight lands into Hongqiao after 23:00, backup options like taxi or DiDi start to look safer.

Regulars use Line 10 as the “no-brainer” option from Hongqiao for Xintiandi and Laoximen, skipping the Line 2 transfer dance. It also puts you close to cafés and hotels around South Shaanxi Road, Shanghai Library, and other former French Concession stops without changing onto Lines 1 or 7.

The catch is Line 10’s split branches: one goes toward Hongqiao Railway Station / Hongqiao Airport T1, the other toward Xinjiangwancheng. Boarding the wrong branch downtown can burn 20–30 extra minutes and an extra fare, so always check the end-station name on the platform signs and train screens.

If you are arriving into T2 and heading to Xintiandi or the French Concession, budget 10–15 minutes to get from T2 to the Line 10 platforms, then 25–35 minutes of train time, plus a few minutes to buy a ticket. Add that up and you are usually looking at 45–60 minutes gate to street.

Step-by-step: using Metro Line 10 from Hongqiao

  • 1. From T1, follow the “Metro / Line 10” signs down to the station; from T2, walk or shuttle 10–15 minutes to T1 or Hongqiao Railway Station.
  • 2. At the ticket machines, select your destination (for Xintiandi, tap “Xintiandi”) and pay around ¥3–6 in cash or with bank card/phone, or tap in with a Shanghai transit card.
  • 3. On the platform, confirm you are boarding the Hongqiao-bound branch when coming from town, or the correct inner-city direction when leaving the airport; check the end-station name on the front and side LED displays.
  • 4. Ride 25–35 minutes to central stops like Xintiandi, Laoximen, Yuyuan Garden, or South Shaanxi Road, and listen for bilingual (Chinese/English) stop announcements.
  • 5. At your stop, follow exit numbers toward your hotel street; plan 5–10 minutes of walking from exit to lobby in areas like Xintiandi or the former French Concession.

Tip: for late flights aiming to use Line 10, check the last-train time for Hongqiao Airport T1 on your date, then build in at least a 20–30 minute buffer for immigration, bags, and the walk from T2 if needed.
