Airport Shuttle Bus Line 3

Line 3 links SHA to Shanghai South Railway Station in 30–40 minutes

Airport Shuttle Bus Line 3 runs between Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (both T1 and T2) and Shanghai South Railway Station, which sits about 12 km away on the south side of the city. This line mainly helps domestic fliers and long-distance train riders connect, so it makes more sense if you already know you need Shanghai South rather than central downtown spots like People’s Square.

The first Line 3 bus usually leaves around 06:00 from Hongqiao and the last departures are typically just after 23:00, but times shift slightly, so check the same-day board inside T1/T2. Buses depart from the official airport shuttle bus area at each terminal, not from the city buses on the public roads, and you’ll see “Line 3” and “South Railway Station” (上海南站) on the signs.

A one-way ticket on Airport Shuttle Bus Line 3 usually runs in the ¥20 range, paid in cash (RMB) at the counter or on board; some buses also accept local transit cards like the Shanghai Public Transportation Card. Buy your ticket at the shuttle desk near the Line 3 stop in T1 or T2, then hand it to the driver when boarding through the front door.

Expect a ride of around 30–40 minutes in light traffic and up to 60 minutes in the evening peak, since Line 3 follows city streets rather than using an express rail link. The buses are standard city coaches with luggage space under or near the front seats, but there is no reserved seating and no toilets on board, so hit the restroom near your gate or the arrivals hall before you head to the stop.

Compared with Metro Line 2 from Hongqiao T2 or a licensed taxi from the official rank, Line 3 is more targeted: it only really shines if you are catching a train from Shanghai South Railway Station or staying in that specific part of town. If you are heading to The Bund, Nanjing Road, or Pudong, metro or taxi from T1/T2 will be faster or involve fewer transfers.

Practical tip: Screenshot the Chinese name “机场三线 到 上海南站” on your phone before landing so you can match the characters on airport signs and confirm with staff at T1 or T2 if you’re lining up for the correct bus bay.
