Airport Bus Line 2

Bus

Bus 60-90 min

60–90 minutes into town if the route matches your hotel

Airport Bus Line 2 runs from Shanghai Pudong (PVG) into central areas in about 60–90 minutes, depending on city traffic. Buses stop at both T1 and T2, so you don’t need to switch terminals first. It’s a straight surface run into town, slower than the Maglev but cheaper than most taxis for solo travelers.

The line typically runs every 15–30 minutes during normal operating hours, which covers most daytime and evening arrivals. You board from clearly marked airport bus counters and bays outside the arrivals halls at T1 and T2. If your hotel or final stop sits close to one of Line 2’s downtown corridors, you cut out a taxi from Pudong and only pay for a short hop in the city.

Figure on about 60 minutes travel time in lighter traffic and closer to 90 minutes in the evening rush on weekdays. The bus uses main surface roads into central Shanghai, so delays mirror whatever the ring roads are doing that day. Build in at least a 30-minute buffer if you have a train departure from Shanghai Railway Station or Hongqiao later the same day.

Tickets sell from staffed counters in the PVG arrivals halls, with prices well under a typical ¥180–220 taxi from Pudong to central Shanghai. You pay in yuan, and some counters accept common bank cards, but always assume cash wins. Keep the ticket stub; staff sometimes check it again when you exit at major downtown stops.

Line 2 is best when your destination lines up with its fixed route, such as areas along key central corridors instead of backtracking from a random stop. If you still need a second leg on Metro Line 2 or Line 10, factor in another 20–30 minutes after you step off the bus. The slower door-to-door profile becomes obvious once you compare with the 8-minute Maglev from PVG to Longyang Road plus a short metro ride.

Practical tip: Before you buy a ticket at Pudong, pull up your hotel on a map and confirm it’s within 500–800 meters of an Airport Bus Line 2 stop; if it isn’t, switch to Maglev + Metro or a taxi instead.
