China Mobile sits landside in PVG Terminal 2
China Mobile in Shanghai Pudong T2 is the spot to sort your phone plan before security, especially if you land without data. It’s on the public (landside) level of Terminal 2, so you can use it both on arrival and departure. Staff usually handle basic English, enough to set up tourist SIMs and top-ups without drama.
Figure on buying a local SIM with data-only or talk + data packages that run roughly 7–30 days; prices typically beat what you’d pay roaming with a US or European carrier. Bring your passport: Chinese SIM registration rules require it, and they will refuse a sale without it. Expect them to scan your ID and photograph you as part of activation.
SIM activation often takes 5–15 minutes, and service usually comes up before you leave the counter. Ask specifically about access to apps like WhatsApp, Gmail, or Google Maps; many foreign apps hit China’s firewall and need a VPN, which China Mobile does not provide. If eSIM is important, ask straight away, as not every plan or device is supported.
Plan a short stop here before heading to security in T2, especially if you rely on ride-hailing apps into Shanghai; having local data makes Didi and map apps far less painful right out of PVG.
