Duty Free

T1

Gate-side duty free in T1 for last‑minute buys

This Duty Free Shop sits airside in Penang’s T1, after security and immigration, so you can shop right up until boarding. It mainly targets international departures, and prices are generally lower than downtown Malaysia for liquor and tobacco thanks to duty exemptions. Shelves lean heavily toward regional whiskies, basic cognac labels, and standard gin and vodka rather than rare bottles.

You’ll also see the usual 1‑litre spirits promos (2‑for deals around RM180–RM260 on mainstream brands) plus cartons of cigarettes and some travel‑retail‑only gift packs. Stock skews mainstream: think Johnnie Walker, Chivas, Jack Daniel’s, Hennessy VS, Gordon’s, and Absolut. Payment terminals accept major cards and contactless; ring them up in under five minutes if your boarding pass is already in hand.

Beyond alcohol and tobacco, there’s a small cosmetics and skincare corner with mid‑range brands and Malaysia‑friendly SPF products, plus chocolates and snacks in travel packs. Expect the usual Toblerone, Ferrero Rocher, and assorted praline tins in the RM30–RM80 range. Snacks include local nut mixes and some durian products, which may be restricted by your airline in the cabin, so check before you buy strong‑smelling items.

Hours usually follow the international departure bank, roughly early morning to late evening when flights cluster between about 06:00 and 23:00. Staff close sections in lulls between banks, but the main counter stays open whenever an overseas departure shows on the screens. If your flight leaves after 22:00, walk past about 60–90 minutes before departure to avoid finding certain shelves already restocked and roped off.

Practical tip: bring your boarding pass when you browse; some liquor deals at Penang’s T1 Duty Free Shop only show correct allowances and limits once staff scan your flight details at the counter.
