The Chicken Rice Shop

★ 3

RM15 gets you a plate of chicken rice fast

The Chicken Rice Shop sits airside in T1 at Penang International Airport, just past security before the main cluster of boarding gates. It’s a basic chain outlet with a 3-star reputation, but it does one thing reliably: chicken rice, ready in under 10–15 minutes even when the queue looks long.

Signature Hainanese steamed chicken with rice usually runs around RM15–RM20 per person, depending on set size and add-ons. You can also get roasted chicken, chicken curry, and simple sides like pak choy or braised eggs if you want something closer to a full meal. Portion sizes sit in the “airport-normal” range: not huge, not tiny, and generally enough to last a 2–3 hour flight.

Opening hours often track flight banks, roughly from early morning check-in waves through the late evening departures, so you’ll usually find it open from around 7:00 to 22:00. It’s inside security in T1, so this is only an option after you clear immigration and screening; don’t plan it as a pre-check-in lunch spot. Seating is tight and spills into the concourse, so at peak times you may end up at a shared table or eating in 15–20 minutes.

If you’re ordering once, go simple: steamed or roasted chicken rice, plus a drink. Expect soft drinks and bottled water in the RM4–RM7 range, and local-style drinks like iced tea or kopi for a few ringgit more than in town. Skip anything too heavy on the bone if you’re rushing; the boneless cuts are quicker to eat and easier to pack up if boarding gets called suddenly.

Practical tip: check your gate number first; from The Chicken Rice Shop to the furthest gates in T1 is about a 5–8 minute walk, so start heading out once boarding is 10 minutes away.
