Behind Starbucks is where you turn for security and the Plaza Premium Lounge
This Starbucks sits airside in T1 at Penang International Airport, just past the main post-security area and open daily from 06:00 to 22:00. It’s the landmark people use in walkthrough videos to explain how to find the Plaza Premium Lounge: walk past Starbucks, then follow signs behind it toward the lounge entrance. If you’re meeting someone before a flight, “by Starbucks in T1” is the phrase locals use.
Prices run in the $$ range by airport standards, so a tall Caffè Americano and a pastry will usually land in the mid-teen ringgit bracket. The menu is the standard Starbucks playbook: espresso drinks, Frappuccinos, basic sandwiches, and cakes. If you want something predictable before a domestic hop, the Americano is the safe caffeine move; skip anything that requires a lot of customisation when the queue stretches toward the adjacent gates.
It’s inside security in T1, so you can’t use it as a landside meeting point, but it works well once you’ve cleared checks and are looking for a regroup spot near the Plaza Premium Lounge. Seating is limited and often fills around early-morning departures from about 07:00 to 09:00, and again in the evening bank around 19:00, so expect to hover for a table during those peaks. Power outlets are hit-or-miss, so don’t plan a full charging session.
Watch out for longer waits when a couple of narrowbody flights board at nearby gates within the same 30-minute window; a simple latte can stretch to 10–15 minutes then. If your priority is the lounge rather than coffee, skip the line, walk straight past Starbucks, and follow airport signage behind it. Tip: order and pay via the Starbucks app while you’re still at your gate in T1, then swing by on the way to security or the lounge to just grab and go.
