Kenny Rogers Roasters

★ 3

Quarter chicken sets here run about RM20–25 at T1.

Kenny Rogers Roasters sits airside in Penang International’s T1, a familiar name if you want standard roast chicken before your flight. Expect fast-casual counter service, plastic table seating, and a menu that leans heavily on rotisserie chicken with sides like mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and macaroni & cheese. Portions skew generous for an airport, and you’ll usually see trays loaded with a quarter chicken, two sides, and a muffin.

The restaurant typically opens from around 7:00 to 22:00, matching most departures out of PEN’s T1. That covers early AirAsia hops and late Malaysia Airlines flights. If you’re short on time, build in at least 15–20 minutes; food is cooked in batches, so when a tray just came out, you’re eating quickly, but if they’re between batches, you’ll stand around waiting at the counter.

Menu boards list combo meals clearly around the RM20–30 range, plus drinks at roughly RM5–8. The best value tends to be the quarter chicken with two sides; going up to a half chicken drives the bill closer to RM35 without feeling twice as good. Sides are hit-or-miss: stick to mashed potatoes and coleslaw, skip anything that looks like it has been under the heat lamp for more than 30 minutes.

The rating hovers around 3 out of 5, which tracks: food is passable, not a destination. You’re paying airport pricing, but still less than some international chains down the concourse in T1. Service is functional; trays occasionally pile up on tables during busy banks when several flights board within the same 30-minute window.

Tip: check the rotisserie first. If you see a fresh batch going up, order chicken; if not, grab a lighter side-only combo or walk 50–100 meters further down T1 for something quicker.
