Regional coaches from OTP save a trip into Gara de Nord
If you’re heading to cities like Brașov, Ploiești, or Constanța after landing at Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP), intercity coaches from the airport let you skip an extra transfer into the city’s main rail and bus hubs. Services use standard regional buses or coaches rather than city buses, and most schedules are built around daytime and early-evening arrivals rather than true red-eyes.
All intercity coach departures currently use Terminal 1 at OTP, since that’s the airport’s only passenger terminal. Expect pick-up points outside the arrivals level on the curbside, near the same forecourt used by the 780/783 city buses and some hotel shuttles. You’ll usually find printed timetables or operator logos on signs at the bus bays, but routes and operators can change without much notice.
Most regional buses here are pay-on-board with cash fares in Romanian lei, often in the 30–80 RON range for longer routes like Brașov or Constanța, and lower for closer spots such as Ploiești. Some operators also sell tickets online or via apps, but you often still need a QR code or printed confirmation to show the driver. Card acceptance on board is inconsistent, so arrive with at least 100 RON from the airport exchange or ATM.
Departures are typically every 60–180 minutes on major routes rather than the 15–30 minute pattern you see on city buses, so missing one can mean a 2–3 hour wait. Longer-distance coaches often time their runs to afternoon and early-evening bank of arrivals, leaving fewer options late at night or very early in the morning. Always check the specific operator’s latest schedule the week you travel, because seasonal tweaks around July–August and December are common.
Luggage goes in the underfloor bays on classic intercity coaches, and drivers usually expect you to load your own suitcase before boarding. Hand luggage and backpacks ride with you inside, and overhead shelves are sized more for daypacks than full rollaboards. If you’re carrying ski gear or oversized bags, build in an extra 10 minutes at the stand so you’re not holding up a tight departure slot.
Plan your arrival so you can clear immigration and customs in about 30–45 minutes, then aim for a coach that leaves at least 60 minutes after scheduled landing to give yourself some buffer for delays or a long queue at passport control.
