60–70 minutes gets you from OTP to central Bucharest
Bus 783 is the standard public express bus linking Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport (OTP, Terminal 1) with the city centre, ending at Piața Unirii in downtown Sector 3. Stops include key points along Bulevardul Kiseleff and Piața Victoriei, so it works if your hotel or apartment lines up with that spine. Service uses regular city buses, not coaches, so expect front-door boarding, grab bars, and standing room at peaks.
You board Bus 783 outside the arrivals level at Terminal 1, near the marked STB bus platforms that also serve route 780. Look for buses showing “783” and “Piata Unirii” on the front and side displays. Tickets come from the yellow STB machines inside the terminal near the arrivals hall exits or from the small STB kiosk by the bus bays, not on board. Machines show prices in RON and take cards; budget roughly the cost of a standard two-trip urban ticket for a one-way airport run.
As of recent schedules, Bus 783 runs daily with shorter headways during daytime and longer gaps late at night; off-peak intervals can stretch, so assume 20–40 minutes between buses after about 22:00. In traffic, OTP–Unirii runs often land in the 60–70 minute range, but rush hour on DN1 can push you closer to 80 minutes. Build a buffer of at least 90 minutes from airport curb to any fixed-time reservation in central Bucharest.
STB’s standard contactless ticket cards work on 783, and validators sit by each set of doors; tap once after boarding and check the beep and green light. A single urban trip product typically covers the ride, but some visitors prefer loading a multi-trip option (for example, 10 rides) at the airport machine to avoid hunting for tickets later. Keep the card handy for transfers if you plan to hop onto metro lines M1, M2, or M3 after getting off at Piața Unirii.
The main tradeoff versus taxis or app cars is that Bus 783 uses regular road traffic on DN1 and inner-city boulevards, with no dedicated busway for most of the path. You also handle your own luggage on and off the low-floor bus, and overhead racks are limited, so a 23 kg checked bag plus a carry-on can feel tight when the bus fills at intermediate stops like Piața Victoriei. If you land after 23:00, double-check the current timetable so you do not miss the last late-night run.
One practical tip: buy and load your STB card at the airport the moment you clear customs, before walking to the curb; that 3–5 minute stop inside often saves you from missing the next 783 by seconds.
