Car rental

Five rental desks sit opposite arrivals in T1 at NTE

Car hire at Nantes Atlantique Airport runs off a single terminal, T1, with the main rental desks just across from the arrivals hall exit. You walk 2–3 minutes from baggage claim to the counters, then another 2–4 minutes outside to the car parks. Most major brands operate here, typically from early morning around 07:00 until late evening, but exact hours differ slightly by company, so check your booking confirmation before you land.

Pick-up and drop-off use the same outdoor car parks signed “Location de voitures” and “Car rental,” about 150–250 metres from the T1 arrivals doors. Cars are grouped by rental company in marked bays, so you match your plate number to the section printed on your contract. Plan 10–15 minutes from leaving the terminal to actually driving out, longer at weekend peaks in July and August when the Atlantic coast traffic ramps up.

Fuel policy usually defaults to full-to-full, and there’s a petrol station on Boulevard de l’Aéroport roughly 1–2 km from the terminal exit. Take a photo of the pump price and the odometer if you fill up within 10–15 minutes of returning the car; that avoids quibbling over refuelling charges. Many contracts here come with a 250–300 km per day limit, so read the mileage line if you’re heading past La Rochelle or up towards Rennes.

International one-way rentals from NTE can carry a noticeable surcharge, especially into Spain or Italy, sometimes €100–€250 extra compared with a French domestic drop like Paris or Lyon. Adding an extra driver usually runs €5–€12 per day at this airport, and child seats are often €8–€15 daily, capped after 7–10 days. You usually get a small to mid-size manual by default; if you want an automatic for city traffic into central Nantes, book that specifically and assume numbers are limited on Friday afternoons.

Most rental firms at Nantes Atlantique now accept smartphone check-in and digital contracts, but key collection still happens at the desk in T1. Keep your physical driving licence and passport handy at arrivals; pulling them out in the queue can save 2–3 minutes per rental. One last tip: snap photos of all four sides of the car plus the fuel gauge in the car park before you leave the airport, then again when you park in the return bay on the final day.
