Malpensa Express

Train

Train 30 min

30-minute rail link from Malpensa to Milan without zone math

Malpensa Express runs every 30 minutes from both T1 and T2 to central Milan, and the whole pitch is simplicity over savings. You pay more than the standard Trenord regional ticket, but you skip zoning charts, slower stopping patterns, and the feeling that you might be on the wrong train to Gallarate. First departures usually start before 06:00, with late evening runs carrying you back to MXP after 23:00 on most days.

At T1, platforms sit under the terminal near Exit 3 on the arrivals level, with clear “Malpensa Express” signs and Trenord/Trenitalia branding. From T2, the dedicated station connects via a covered walkway that takes about 5 minutes on foot. Trains run direct to Milano Cadorna or Milano Centrale (some via Milano Porta Garibaldi), so pay attention to the destination board; not every train hits every station.

A standard one-way Malpensa–Milano ticket usually prices around €13, versus roughly €8 for slower regional options, and tickets are valid on specific departures within a set time window. You can buy at green Trenord machines, staffed counters in T1, or via app before you land. Seats are 2+2 in second class, with luggage racks near the doors and overhead shelves big enough for most carry-ons.

Trains usually take about 30 minutes to Cadorna and roughly 50 minutes to Centrale, depending on the pattern. Cadorna gives quick connections to Milan Metro lines M1 and M2, while Centrale ties into M2 and M3 plus long-distance Frecciarossa and Italo services. If your hotel sits near Duomo, riding to Cadorna and hopping on Metro line M1 toward San Babila often beats a taxi in daytime traffic.

Tickets bought at machines or counters sometimes need validation on green platform validators for regional services, but Malpensa Express tickets bought for a specific train from machines or online generally do not. Still, check the print: if you see “convalida” instructions, tap the validator before boarding to avoid a fine that can run over €50. Onboard inspection between Malpensa and Milan is common.

Practical tip: pick your Milan station before buying, then match it to the departure board; if you want Milano Centrale and the next train only goes to Cadorna, waiting 15–30 minutes can save you an extra metro transfer with luggage.
