Gate-side Mauritian plates in T1 from 06:00

Local Cuisine Restaurant sits airside in Terminal T1, just past the main security checkpoint, and runs daily from 06:00 to 22:00. It’s one of the few sit-down spots in MRU that leans into Mauritian food instead of generic international menus, with a mid-range price tier (about $$ per main).

The kitchen focuses on local-style dishes: expect curries, rice plates, chutneys, and the house Fish Vindaye. Mains generally land in the mid-price bracket for the airport, and portions get called out as solid for the cost. If you want something distinctly Mauritian before a long-haul, this is the clearest option in T1.

The Fish Vindaye is the signature here: marinated fish in a turmeric and mustard seed sauce, usually served with rice and pickles. If that’s not your thing, look for other Creole-influenced plates and daily specials posted on the board. Vegetarian choices show up, but the menu still leans heavier on seafood and chicken.

Service runs on airport time, not fine dining time: most reports put table-to-food at around 15–25 minutes in normal crowds. Around evening bank departures, when several flights out of T1 bunch together, you’ll want at least 45–60 minutes between sitting down and boarding, especially if you’re ordering hot mains instead of a quick snack and drink.

The rating hovers around 4.5 stars, which is high for an airport restaurant at this price point. Staff are used to passengers with boarding passes in hand, so paying and leaving quickly is usually possible if you flag it early. Card payment is the norm; have a backup card in case one network glitches.

Tip: If you land hungry on an early arrival, clear security straight away and eat here between 06:00 and 09:00, before the late-morning departure rush fills most of the T1 seats.
