Montpellier flyers sometimes skip MPL and bus from MRS instead

Intercity coaches from Marseille Provence Airport to Montpellier run from the airport bus station outside terminals T1 and T2, giving you a direct link to Hérault without flying into MPL. Timetables and operators change seasonally, and current schedules are posted at the bus stands and on the airport website, so check the exact departure time before you book a tight connection.

Most services are long-distance coaches running MRS–Montpellier–other cities, usually using standard highway buses with luggage bays under the cabin and numbered seats. You board at marked bays near the taxi rank and the regular Vitrolles shuttle, with departures grouped by destination name on overhead screens. Drivers generally load checked bags into the underfloor hold and may tag them with basic paper stubs showing the route number.

Tickets normally cost less than a flexible SNCF train ticket bought day-of from Vitrolles Aéroport to Montpellier Saint-Roch, especially if you lock in an advance fare online. You can often buy on the spot from the driver or at a counter in T1, but some operators cap on-board sales once all reserved seats are taken, so advance purchase is safer on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Typical coach journey time MRS–Montpellier runs roughly 2 to 2.5 hours via the A7 and A9 motorways, depending on traffic around Aix-en-Provence and Nîmes. That is longer than the pure driving time of about 1 hour 45 minutes shown on mapping apps, but the bus includes loading stops at the airport and in Montpellier, plus rush-hour slowdowns around 08:00–09:30 and 16:30–19:00.

Most routes drop you at Montpellier’s main bus points near Montpellier Saint-Roch station or the Sabines area, both with tram connections into the city. Some coaches continue past Montpellier toward Béziers or Perpignan, so check that your ticket clearly lists “Montpellier” as a stop with a scheduled time and not only as a through route on the line map.

Build the buffer: land into MRS, clear immigration, then plan at least 45–60 minutes from scheduled arrival in T1 or T2 to first realistic bus departure. That gives you time to collect bags, walk to the bus station, buy a ticket if needed, and still grab a quick coffee before the coach pulls in.
