Official airport taxis line up directly outside Main arrivals

Taxi Autorizado Aeropuerto runs the licensed taxi queue right outside the Main terminal arrivals door at Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA). These taxis sit on the curb opposite the terminal exit, so you see the line as soon as you leave customs. Cars are usually compact sedans with a roof taxi sign and airport permit sticker on the windshield.

Most daytime trips into central Managua run around 15–25 minutes depending on traffic on Carretera Norte. Prices are typically quoted in US dollars or Nicaraguan córdobas; have small bills like US $5s and $10s ready. There’s no meter, so you agree the fare with the driver before you get in. Ask clearly for the price to your exact hotel or barrio, not just “Managua.”

The taxi stand operates whenever flights arrive, so you’ll find cars from early morning arrivals around 05:00 through late-night flights after 22:00. You do not need a reservation for these airport-authorized taxis. Staff near the door sometimes direct you to the next vehicle in line and can repeat the quoted fare in Spanish if needed.

Most drivers accept both US dollars and córdobas; change usually comes in córdobas if you hand over a US $20 for a short city ride. For hotel runs to Zona Rosa, Metrocentro, or Carretera Masaya, expect a bit more than a basic downtown fare. Ask if the price includes tolls or airport parking, even though those add-ons are usually rolled into a single number.

Security staff focus on keeping non-authorized drivers back from the curb in front of the Main terminal doors. If someone approaches you inside the building or in the parking lot offering a “special taxi,” walk straight to the marked queue outside instead. Stick to vehicles in the official line with the airport-issued permit visible.

For a smoother exit, have your hotel name and address written down with a nearby landmark, like “cerca de Metrocentro,” and show it to the Taxi Autorizado Aeropuerto driver before discussing the fare.
