40–55 minutes from MEL to Sunshine, Footscray and Werribee

SkyBus Western Express runs a coach service from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to the western suburbs, so you skip the city and the SkyBus Southbank or CBD stops altogether. Coaches pick up outside T1, T3 and T4, with clear red SkyBus branding and airport signage pointing you to the Western Express stand. Services typically run every 30–60 minutes across the day, matching common bank arrival waves rather than true turn-up-and-go frequency.

Tickets start around the mid-$20s one way when bought online, with slightly higher prices if you pay at the airport kiosks or from staff near the stop. The Western Express usually drops at key hubs such as Footscray and Sunshine, then continues toward Werribee along the western corridor. That structure cuts out the backtrack via Southern Cross Station, which can add 25–40 unnecessary minutes if you’re hauling bags on Metro or a second bus.

You can buy tickets on the SkyBus website or app before you fly, and the QR code works straight from your phone when you board the coach. There’s no need to print anything, and drivers are used to scanning multiple codes for families in one go. Luggage goes in the underfloor hold, so keep your passport and phone in a small personal bag you can take onto the coach.

Coaches are standard long-distance buses with air conditioning, individual seats and overhead lighting, but no toilets and no assigned seating. Most runs line up with early morning departures and late-night arrivals, but the first and last trips of the day can shift by 15–30 minutes between weekdays and weekends. Always check the specific timetable for your flight date rather than relying on a generic “every 30 minutes” headline.

One practical tip: if you land in T2 and have checked bags, add 20–30 minutes for immigration and baggage claim before planning your coach, then aim for a Western Express departure at least 45 minutes after scheduled arrival so you’re not sprinting across the forecourt with a trolley.
