Suburban train

Rs 10–20 gets you from the airport to Tirusulam Railway Station

The suburban stop you want is Tirusulam Railway Station, about 300–400 meters from Chennai International Airport’s T1/T4 side. Trains on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu line run roughly every 10–20 minutes in the daytime, and tickets usually sit in the Rs 10–20 range for short hops. This is the option that makes sense if you already use suburban or MRTS trains in Indian cities and land at MAA between early morning and late evening.

From T1 or T4 arrivals, you walk out to GST Road (NH45) and use the marked pedestrian subway to cross toward Tirusulam; most people cover it in 5–10 minutes with a rollaboard. The station itself is basic: concrete platforms, overhead footbridge, and printed timetables for the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu sector. You buy a paper ticket from the counter for your exact station, so keep a rough idea of your stop name ready before you reach the window.

Trains from Tirusulam typically start after 4:30–5:00 a.m. and thin out after about 10:00–10:30 p.m., so late-night arrivals in T2 usually skip this and take a cab. In the day, you can reach major suburban stops like Tambaram in around 20–25 minutes and Park/Chennai Beach in roughly 35–45 minutes, depending on service type and dwell time. Second-class coaches are standard; there is no reserved seating or airport-style luggage space, so pack light or be ready to stand.

  • Step 1: Exit T1/T4 arrivals, follow signs toward GST Road and the metro/rail area; ask for “Tirusulam station” if in doubt.
  • Step 2: Use the pedestrian underpass to cross the highway; count on 5–10 minutes’ walking from terminal doors to the station entrance.
  • Step 3: At the ticket counter, state your destination (for example “Tambaram” or “Chennai Beach”) and buy a suburban ticket, usually under Rs 20.
  • Step 4: Check the platform board for trains toward your direction; Chennai Beach–bound and Chengalpattu–bound trains use different platforms.
  • Step 5: Board any stopping train for your line, keep your luggage close, and hold onto your paper ticket for the full 20–45 minute ride.

One practical tip: screenshot the latest Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu suburban timetable on your phone before you fly into MAA, so you can pick the right train the moment you walk onto Tirusulam’s platform without hunting for data or staff.
