Car rental

Daily riders who want their own wheels use the airport counters

Self-drive makes sense in Chennai if you’re in town 3–7 days, hopping between OMR, Guindy, and Sriperumbudur without wanting to haggle over every ride. The Airport Car Rental Counters sit in the arrivals halls of both T1 (domestic) and T4 (international), so you can walk there in under 5 minutes from baggage claim instead of hunting outside among 50+ taxi drivers.

Counters typically operate on airline-bank hours, roughly 24/7 around the big departures to DXB, SIN, and BOM, but expect thinner staffing between 02:00 and 04:00. You’ll find the desks just past customs in T4 and near belt numbers 3–5 in T1. Cars range from small hatchbacks to larger SUVs, usually billed per calendar day, with basic tiers often starting around what two airport–city app rides would cost.

Most agencies at the Airport Car Rental Counters want a valid driving licence plus an IDP if yours isn’t in English, and a credit card deposit that can run from one to three days of rental. Expect to spend at least 20–30 minutes at the desk for paperwork and payment, longer if you land around the 06:00 arrival wave when 8–10 flights hit at once. Factor that into your post-landing timing if you have a meeting scheduled in areas like Teynampet or Nungambakkam.

Pick-up and drop-off usually happen in marked rental bays near the multilevel car park across from T1 and T4, about a 5–8 minute walk or a 2–3 minute ride on the airport buggy if available. Staff will usually check for existing scratches with you and note them on a form; take 5–10 photos of all four sides plus the odometer before you drive out onto GST Road (NH45). Fuel policies vary by company, but most follow a full-to-full model, so keep your last refill bill from any pump on GST Road within 10 km of MAA.

If you’re not used to Chennai traffic, plan your first drive outside the 08:30–11:00 and 17:30–21:00 peaks when travel times to central spots like Mount Road can triple from 30 minutes to 90. One practical tip: pre-book online with a noon pick-up time, then print or save the confirmation and walk straight to the named counter in T1 or T4; this usually cuts desk time by about 10–15 minutes compared with walk-up negotiations.
