Landing after midnight and catching a 2:30 bus from Koyambedu
If your RedBus ticket already shows a 02:30 departure from Koyambedu or Omni Bus Stand, treat the airport–city leg as its own hop. Chennai International (T1/T2/T4) sits roughly 17–20 km from most major private bus boarding points, and you need 60–90 minutes from wheels-down to bus door once you factor in bags and road traffic.
RedBus itself doesn’t run airport-origin coaches; you’re connecting from MAA into the city, then boarding your RedBus operator at Koyambedu or Madhavaram. From T1, T2, or T4, the domestic and international terminals sit along GST Road, about 15–20 minutes from Guindy by car at 01:00, but the same trip can hit 35–40 minutes at 19:00.
For late-night arrivals, most RedBus intercity coaches in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka depart between 21:00 and 01:30, with a second band 04:30–06:30. Count backwards: immigration plus bags at T4 can eat 45–60 minutes on an international arrival, so a 23:00 landing pairs safely with a 01:00 bus; a 00:30 landing is more realistic for a 03:30 departure.
Expect to pay ₹350–₹600 for an app taxi from the airport to Koyambedu at 23:00, versus ₹250–₹450 to Kilambakkam Mofussil Bus Terminus 30–35 km south. Kilambakkam is pulling more RedBus-listed operators each month, but many premium sleepers still originate at Koyambedu or Omni, so check the boarding column on your RedBus ticket before you pick your cab.
At Koyambedu, private operators using RedBus often park along specific lanes near the CMBT complex and nearby streets, with boarding time printed as 21:45 or 22:00 but actual engine-on closer to 15–20 minutes later. Don’t cut it too close: aim to reach the boarding landmark a full 20 minutes before the time shown, because some buses do leave exactly on schedule during festival weeks.
One more detail: many intercity coaches refuse large hard-shell suitcases in the aisle and expect them in the underbelly hold, which is usually opened 10–15 minutes before departure. Tag your luggage at the operator’s counter if they offer paper tags, and keep a photo of the bus number plate on your phone in case multiple sleepers park in the same row.
Practical tip: when booking RedBus after an MAA arrival, leave at least 2 hours after a domestic landing and 3 hours after an international landing; if your flight is regularly delayed on FlightRadar24, pad another 30 minutes and pick the next bus slot.
