Hippopotamus

Gate-side steak at Terminal 1

Right in Terminal 1 at Lyon Saint-Exupéry, Hippopotamus is the sit-down option when you actually want a plate and cutlery instead of a takeaway box. It runs through the day in sync with main flight banks, so you can usually get a hot meal at both lunch and dinner hours, not just a croissant at 07:00.

The menu is classic French-chain steakhouse: beef cuts, burgers, and sauces you recognize, with mains typically landing in the €15–€25 range depending on the cut. You’re paying airport prices, but it’s still less punishing than many Paris hubs. Portions are standard Hippopotamus size, so one main plus a drink is enough before a 2–3 hour flight.

Service is sit-down with table orders, so this is not a 10-minute in-and-out stop. Budget at least 45 minutes from being seated to paying the bill if you order a cooked-to-order steak at a medium airport rush time like 12:00–14:00. If you only have 30 minutes before your boarding time shows at the gate screens, go for a burger or salad instead of a thick steak.

Being airside in Terminal 1 means you clear security first, then eat, which is the safer order of operations at LYS. That also means you’re already close to Schengen and some non-Schengen gates, so you’re not gambling on a shuttle bus or extra passport check after your meal. Check your specific gate number on the screens before you sit, as some long-haul departures start boarding 45 minutes before the scheduled time.

Best play: grab a table at Hippopotamus right after security in Terminal 1, set a hard alarm for 35 minutes before departure, and keep one eye on the overhead flight displays while you wait for your main.
