60–70 minutes from Heathrow to central London on the Piccadilly line
The Piccadilly line runs directly from Heathrow’s T2, T3, T4 and T5 into central London in about 60–70 minutes to stations like Hammersmith, South Kensington, Leicester Square and King’s Cross St Pancras. Trains stop at all Heathrow terminals with clearly signed Underground symbols in each arrivals hall.
Standard adult pay-as-you-go fares with Oyster or contactless usually cap around the zone 1–6 daily limit, which is cheaper than a Heathrow Express single bought on the day. Paper tickets from the Heathrow Underground stations at T2/3, T4 or T5 cost more than tapping in with contactless or Oyster, so treat the ticket machines as a backup option.
Services normally run every 5–10 minutes during the day from all Heathrow terminals, with slightly longer gaps late at night. First trains from Heathrow T2/3 typically leave around 05:00, with the last departures close to midnight, so very early red-eyes and ultra-late arrivals might need the night bus or a taxi.
The Piccadilly line at Heathrow sits underground below Arrivals at T2/3, at the far end of the terminal at T4, and directly beneath the terminal at T5, all connected by lifts and escalators. Allow 10–15 minutes from stepping into Arrivals at T5 to standing on the platform, especially if you need to buy an Oyster card from the machines near the ticket barriers.
From Heathrow T2/3, trains toward central London pass stations with direct interchanges to other lines, including Barons Court for the District line, Green Park for the Victoria line and the Elizabeth line exit at Farringdon. If you need King’s Cross St Pancras for rail connections, stay on the Piccadilly line the whole way instead of changing.
If you board at T5 or T4, both branches merge at Heathrow T2/3 and then run the same route into town, so check the front display and platform screens showing “via Heathrow T2&3, central London” before boarding. Trains also serve local west London stops like Hounslow West and Acton Town, which can be useful if you’re staying outside zone 1.
One practical tip: avoid large rigid suitcases at peak weekday times around 07:30–09:30 and 16:30–18:30, because Piccadilly line carriages are narrow and the trip from Heathrow to Green Park alone can be about 45 minutes of standing room only.
