Based operators at KTN mostly use the Hangars, not the lots

The Hangars at Ketchikan International Airport sit on the airport grounds near the main runway serving Terminal T, and they function more as home base for local operators than as casual parking for visiting drivers. This area is primarily tied to based GA and charter outfits that operate year-round in Southeast Alaska’s weather, not something you reserve alongside your airline ticket. If you’re flying out on Alaska Airlines or another commercial carrier, you’ll use the regular public parking tied to the passenger terminal instead of the Hangars area.

KTN’s terminal in T has a single main public parking setup that connects by a short walk to the passenger ferry across Tongass Narrows, while the Hangars sit deeper in the airfield footprint serving maintenance and storage for aircraft. That means you can’t just pull up at a random hangar door, park a rental car, and expect it to be fine for a 3-day trip. Ground access inside the secured operations area is controlled, and the priority is aircraft, not long-term car storage. Treat this space as aviation infrastructure, not an overflow lot.

Pricing for public parking at KTN is posted for the terminal lot, not for the Hangars, which typically operate on lease or contract arrangements with individual tenants rather than per-day vehicle charges. If you’re coming in for a charter flight that uses a specific hangar, confirm in advance with that operator if they allow short-term vehicle parking by their door and for how many hours. Without that explicit OK, plan to park in the standard terminal lot and factor in the short ferry ride to the airport building as part of your timing.

If your trip involves chartering out of a hangar on the KTN side of Tongass Narrows, ask your charter company for written directions that include gate numbers, access codes, and any approved parking spaces, ideally sent by email or text 24 hours before departure, then follow those instructions exactly instead of improvising where to leave your car.
