Five-minute shuttle from Main terminal, used as unofficial parking
The Rental Car Facility Parking sits just a 5-minute shuttle ride from KOA’s Main terminal and ends up doing double duty: official rental return plus de-facto off-terminal parking for people dealing with cars right before or after a flight. The lots are close to the runway, so you’re not burning 20–30 minutes just to get back to the airport like at many mainland fields.
KOA’s rental setup runs on basic counter service. One FlyerTalk regular describes it as “just a standard counter service location,” and another says they simply park and walk straight to the counter because “there is no process.” No multi-level garage, no skybridges, just ground-level stalls, a small building, and shuttle stops spaced through the facility.
On timing, frequent renters report that 1 hour 45 minutes before departure is more than enough when you’re returning a car and catching a flight at Kona. KOA is small, security is usually light, and with only a 5‑minute shuttle, this lot works for quick drop-offs, car swaps, or short goodbyes without having to enter the terminal loop early.
What regulars do: National Emerald Club drivers head straight to the Emerald Aisle (EA) parking first to pick a car, then loop back to the counter only if paperwork requires it. Others just park directly in the rental return lane, leave the keys as directed, and hop the shuttle, skipping any extra back-and-forth in the lot.
Watch out for the lack of covered parking or premium amenities here; this is open asphalt under the Kona sun. Build your buffer around the shuttle: plan for a 5‑minute ride plus 10–15 minutes to walk to your gate from the drop-off point at the Main terminal.
