Main Car Park

Short-stay

30–60 seconds’ walk from Kigali T1 doors

Main Car Park at Kigali International Airport sits directly in front of Terminal 1, so you’re usually inside the building within about a minute of locking your car. It’s a short-stay car park, best for quick drop-offs, pick-ups, and same‑day trips where you don’t want to gamble on street parking or wait for shuttles. You enter from the main airport access road, pass security checks, and then follow signs for “Main Car Park” right by the T1 entrance.

This is officially classed as a short-stay option, so think in hours, not days. It works well for stays under 24 hours or for people meeting an arriving flight that lands in T1. Pricing at KGL is usually tiered by the hour, with the first hour cheaper than staying half the day; check the posted board at the entrance gate before taking a ticket so you know what an extra hour will cost.

The Main Car Park is uncovered, with standard outdoor bays lined up directly opposite the T1 departure and arrival doors. That layout keeps walking distances short but also means your car sits in the Kigali sun and rain. Turnover is fairly high because most drivers are dropping off or collecting passengers, so even at peak times around morning and evening banks of flights, you normally find a space if you’re willing to circle a row or two.

Security at KGL includes vehicle screening at the airport perimeter before you reach the Main Car Park, and you pass at least one checkpoint on the way in. There are marked pedestrian paths leading from the parking rows to the terminal entrance, which sit roughly 50–150 meters from most bays. Payment is usually at a staffed booth or machine near the exit barrier, so keep your ticket somewhere you can grab in under 10 seconds.

Tip: If you’re just dropping off at T1, pull into the Main Car Park, walk your passenger to the check-in area, and plan your stop around the posted first-hour rate; it’s often cheaper and less stressful than rushing the curbside lane.
