Cascade Bar

A ★ 4

Terminal A’s main airside bar beats hunting the food court

In Terminal A at O. R. Tambo, Cascade Bar is one of the few named spots where you can sit down for a drink without trekking to the central food court. It sits airside after security, so you can keep an eye on boarding times while you linger over a beer, glass of South African wine, or a basic mixed drink. The place pulls a steady 4-star rating, mainly on location and straightforward service rather than anything fancy.

Drinks lean standard: local lagers, a couple of recognizable international beers, house wines by the glass, and basic spirits poured with soft drinks. Expect airport pricing, with beers and wines around typical JNB bar levels rather than lounge-style “free” pours. There’s usually a short snack menu on hand – think bar bites more than a full dinner – so eat elsewhere in Terminal A if you want something substantial before a long-haul flight.

Because Cascade Bar sits in the core A concourse, it works well if you’re flying out on regional carriers using Terminal A and don’t want to walk over toward Terminals B or C in search of more options. Seats are standard bar stools and a few small tables, and power outlets can be hit-or-miss, so charge your phone at the gate if you’re down below 30%. Noise level tracks flight banks: quiet in mid-afternoon, louder in the evening wave of departures.

Use Cascade Bar as your “plan B” if the airline lounge is crowded or you’re not eligible. It’s a clear upgrade over drinking at the gate, and you stay within a two- to five-minute walk of most Terminal A boarding doors. Tip: check your gate on the screens before you sit; if your flight ends up at a bus gate at the far end of A, give yourself at least 10 minutes’ walk time from your barstool to final boarding call.
