Drop-off and Go

Short-stay drop-off

First 20 minutes are free right outside the international terminal

Drop-off and Go at O. R. Tambo sits directly on the terminal road in front of the international side, so you pull up curbside instead of heading into a multilevel parkade. This area is set up for fast hand‑offs, not long parking, and airport guides note that the first 20 minutes are free. It’s the spot locals use when they want to stay with the car, see someone off, and drive out again without walking from a distant bay.

This short-stay zone serves Terminal A for international flights, right on the departures and arrivals roadway. Signage on the approach to JNB clearly marks “Drop-off and Go” separate from the longer-stay parkade entrances about a few hundred meters further along. Because you’re on the main loop, expect traffic to stack up around peak departures and arrivals, especially around 06:00–08:00 and 18:00–21:00.

Pricing is structured around that 20‑minute grace period: under 20 minutes costs R0, and after that you slide into paid short-stay territory similar to parkade rates. This makes the bay workable for quick pick-ups once a passenger has cleared arrivals, but expensive if you sit waiting for bags from a delayed flight. If you know the flight lands at 14:00, tell your passenger to text you from customs and aim to arrive around 10 minutes after that.

Security staff patrol Drop-off and Go constantly and will move drivers on if they look like they’re treating it as long-stay; you’re not leaving the car here for an hour while you go inside Terminal A. Use your hazard lights, keep the driver in the seat, and keep loading or unloading active. This is stricter than the multistorey parkades just beyond, where you can lock up and walk into the terminal.

Tip: For collections, wait at the fuel station or McDonald’s on the approach road and roll into Drop-off and Go only once your passenger messages that they are at the Terminal A curb, so you stay inside the 20‑minute free window.
