News and Gift Shop

After security in the Main terminal, News and Gift Shop is basically ITO’s only retail stop.

This tiny stand sits airside in the Main terminal near the gate seating, and it’s easy to walk past if you’re not looking for it. Expect a minimal rack of snacks, some bottled drinks, and a narrow shelf of last-minute souvenirs with “Hilo” or “Hawaii” logos. Hours tend to track the day’s flight schedule, so if you have the first or last flight of the day, don’t count on it being open.

Prices run higher than in Hilo town: think convenience-store markups on chips, candy, and soft drinks. Selection is thin compared with Kona (KOA) or Honolulu (HNL). You might find a few basic travel items like aspirin, gum, and maybe a neck pillow, but not a full range of toiletries. Food is mostly packaged; there’s no real hot meal option attached to this stand.

Regulars on Hawaii forums say they buy snacks, magazines, and gifts in Hilo before heading to the airport, because ITO’s post-security retail is this shop and not much else. That advice holds up: if you want specific local coffee, mac nuts, or nicer gifts, grab them at a supermarket or tourist shop in town, not here at departure time.

Practical tip: treat News and Gift Shop as a backup for a drink and a candy bar before boarding, not as your main shopping stop for Hilo.
