News Café

There isn’t a confirmed News Café inside HRE right now

Despite the familiar brand name, current reports from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare don’t show an operating News Café in either the International or Domestic terminals. Older guides sometimes list it, but recent traveller posts and mapping tools don’t back that up in 2024.

HRE runs two main areas, labelled International and Domestic, and neither side has a clearly signed News Café at check-in, in the public arrivals halls, or past security. If you see the name on a dated airport directory or third-party website, treat it as legacy info from before the airport’s refurbishment a few years back.

Food options that actually show up today sit on the International side near the main departures concourse, roughly in the range of gates used by airlines like Ethiopian and SAA, plus smaller regional carriers. Pricing in those spots tends to run higher than central Harare cafés, with coffee often above US$3 and simple hot dishes landing closer to US$8–12.

Because News Café isn’t reliably present inside the terminal, build in time to eat in town along Airport Road or in central Harare, then head to HRE about 2 hours before regional departures or 3 hours before long-haul. Once airside, expect straightforward snacks and basic bar service rather than the full cocktail-and-food menu you might associate with the News Café chain.

Practical tip: if airport staff or taxi drivers mention a News Café, ask for a specific floor and area (for example, “International departures, after security on level 2”). If they can’t give a clear location, assume it’s closed or off-airport and plan your meal around the other visible cafés and bars inside HRE.
