Main Car Park

Short-term

Locals say they rarely leave a car at HRE at all

The Main Car Park at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) sits directly in front of the terminal complex and functions as the short-term option for both the International and Domestic terminals. It’s closest to the main departures entrance, so it mainly serves quick drop-offs, pick-ups, and airport errands that take under an hour.

This is a short-stay car park, signed on airport maps as “Main Car Park – Short Term,” and geared to same-day use rather than multi-day trips. You walk from your car to either the International or Domestic terminal doors in roughly 2–5 minutes, depending on how far back you park in the rows. Payment is usually handled at booths near the exit barrier in local currency.

Regular travellers on r/Zimbabwe threads say they typically arrange lifts with friends or use taxis/Bolt instead of parking a personal car at HRE, with several noting that “no one really parks long term at HRE, we just get dropped.” That matches how the car park is physically set up: closest lanes near the terminal stay busy with quick pick-up vehicles and taxis turning over every few minutes.

The Main Car Park works best if you’re dropping someone for a 10:00 International departure or collecting an arrival off the evening Airlink or Fastjet flights and need to walk into the terminal. For true park-and-fly, locals on Reddit often point visitors to off-airport arrangements, rides from family in Harare’s northern suburbs, or an app-based ride costing a few US dollars each way.

Practical tip: if you just need 5–10 minutes to meet someone at Arrivals, have the driver stay with the car in the Main Car Park and position in rows closest to the terminal doors to avoid looping the access road again.
