40–50 minutes gets you from HGH to central Hangzhou
The Airport Shuttle Bus Downtown Line runs from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) to the city center in about 40–50 minutes, traffic depending. It suits first-time visitors with checked bags who want a single, no-transfer ride into town. Fares sit in the middle ground: more than the metro, noticeably less than a taxi or Didi for the same route.
Buses depart from outside the arrivals area of T1–T4, with clear "Airport Shuttle Bus" signs and English on most boards. The Downtown Line runs roughly every 15–30 minutes during the day, with schedules tightening in late evening. You pay at the ticket counter or kiosk near the bus bays before boarding, and tickets are tied to that specific line, not to a seat number.
Standard one-way tickets on the Downtown Line typically price in the low tens of RMB per person, versus 60–90 RMB for many taxi rides into similar downtown areas. Kids usually pay a reduced fare, listed on the fare board by the kiosk in the arrivals hall. Keep cash (RMB) handy; some counters accept mobile payment like Alipay or WeChat Pay, but not all agents process foreign cards smoothly.
The Downtown Line drops you at a central Hangzhou stop such as a main hotel cluster or transport hub listed on the route board at HGH. Total time door to door usually lands under an hour if you’re staying near the official drop-off point. If your hotel is farther away, plan on a short taxi or rideshare from the final bus stop, which might add another 10–20 minutes.
Service normally runs from early morning to late evening, with first departures around domestic banked arrivals and last buses shortly after the final inbound flights into HGH’s T3 and T4. Late-night arrivals after the last scheduled bus often have to switch to taxi or Didi, so check the same-day schedule posted near baggage claim. During Chinese holidays, frequencies can change, and extra buses sometimes appear in peak hours.
Luggage goes in the under-floor compartment; the driver opens it for you at HGH and again at the downtown stop, and larger suitcases fit without issue. Hand luggage can ride with you on the seat, but overhead space is limited and narrow. Keep passports, cash, and electronics in a small bag on your lap rather than in the big checked suitcase downstairs.
Tip: buy your Downtown Line ticket before grabbing snacks or coffee in arrivals, because seats on the next bus can fill quickly when several flights land together.
