Terminal 2

3 airlines 1 restaurant

Terminal T2 hosts 3 airlines. You'll find 1 dining option here.

Gate G16 in T2 is often the main Lufthansa Schengen departure point

Terminal 2 at Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport (HAM) handles Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Austrian Airlines flights, mainly Schengen routes using gates in the G pier. Check the departure boards near security for G-gate assignments; gates G12–G18 see a lot of Lufthansa traffic during the morning bank between 06:00 and 09:00.

Check-in rows 8–10 handle Lufthansa and partners

For Lufthansa, Swiss, and Austrian in T2, head to check-in rows 8–10 on the departures level. Self-service bag drops sit directly in front of the main Lufthansa counters, with staffed desks typically opening about 2 hours before European departures. If you already have a boarding pass, the dedicated bag-drop machines usually move quicker than the staffed counters during the 07:00–08:00 rush.

Security for T2 sits just past the Lufthansa counters

The main security checkpoint for Terminal 2 is directly behind the Lufthansa check-in area, with priority lanes marked for Lufthansa and Star Alliance status customers. Morning queues around 06:30 can run 15–20 minutes, but after 10:00 you often get through in under 10. Family lanes are signed in German and English, so check the overhead boards before joining the line.

McDonald’s sits airside near the T1–T2 connector

The only listed restaurant in Terminal 2 is McDonald’s, located airside close to the walkway linking T2’s G gates with Terminal 1’s A/B gates. Prices run a bit higher than city stores; a basic menu meal usually lands around €9–€11. Breakfast items start showing up from around 05:00 to catch the early Lufthansa wave, and seating spills into the common gate-area benches.

Lounges are limited, so plan your pre-flight time at the gate

No dedicated Lufthansa or third-party lounges are catalogued inside Terminal 2 at HAM, even for Miles & More status holders or business class passengers. If your fare or status normally gets lounge access elsewhere in the network, assume you’ll be sitting in the gate area here. Power outlets line several seats near gates G14 and G15, and those fill first during the 17:00–19:00 evening departures.

Shops are sparse in T2, with basics covered in T1

There are no specific shops catalogued in T2 beyond general airport facilities. If you need a pharmacy or larger duty-free selection, follow the signs toward Terminal 1 airside; the walk from a central G-gate to the main T1 retail area takes about 5–7 minutes. Factor that into boarding times, since Lufthansa typically starts boarding Schengen flights 30 minutes before departure.

Connections between T1 and T2 stay inside security

HAM treats T1 and T2 as one connected Schengen concourse once you’re past security, so you do not re-clear security when walking between terminals for a Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian flight. Time the walk: from gate G16 in T2 to a mid-A gate in T1 usually takes 8–10 minutes at a normal pace, and you pass McDonald’s roughly halfway along.

Final tip: clear security in T2, then walk for options

If you fly Lufthansa, Swiss, or Austrian, check in and clear security in T2, then use the 5–10 minute airside walk into T1 for better food and shopping before heading back to your G-gate about 30 minutes before boarding.
