Gate-side newsstand option before T1/T2 security: Relay

Relay sits landside at Hamburg Helmut Schmidt Airport, between Terminals T1 and T2, so you can use it before you clear security or while waiting for arrivals. It’s a classic travel convenience shop: German and international magazines, daily newspapers, paperback bestsellers, plus some maps and basic stationery on the same racks.

Expect airport pricing: bottled water around €3, soft drinks closer to €3.50, and single chocolate bars or Haribo bags from about €1.50. There’s a small fridge with cold drinks and grab-and-go snacks, plus a few sandwiches and pastries that rotate during the day. Card payments are standard; contactless works fine for quick in-and-out stops.

Relay usually opens early in the morning, around the first T1 departures, and stays open into the evening, roughly in line with the main terminal activity. That makes it a reliable last stop for a phone charger, EU plug adapter, or headphones if something died on the S‑Bahn. You’ll also find travel-size toiletries in the same aisle as umbrella-style foldable bags and neck pillows.

If you plan to spend time in the non-Schengen area or at a far T1/T2 gate, grab your reading material and snacks here so you’re not stuck with only vending machines later. Tip: pick up a 0.5L water instead of 0.33L cans; it’s better value and still fine through security if you drink it before screening.
