Inside José Joaquín de Olmedo International (GYE) Terminal 1, the Authorized Taxi Services counters sit directly after baggage claim and customs, before you exit to the public arrivals hall. These are airport-approved companies that work on fixed prices by zone, so you get a printed quote to central Guayaquil, the ferry terminals, or the cruise piers before you step into the car. Most drivers accept both cash in US dollars and card, but have small bills on hand because machines occasionally go offline.

A standard authorized taxi into downtown Guayaquil usually runs in the US$5–US$8 range, depending on exact address and traffic at the time you book at the counter. You pay or confirm the fare at the desk, then walk 30–60 seconds outside to the marked taxi lane just beyond the Terminal 1 arrivals door. Staff match you with a car using a paper ticket or slip that shows the price and destination, which makes it easier to reclaim expenses later.

From GYE to the main Malecón 2000 riverfront area is roughly 15–20 minutes by authorized taxi in light traffic, and closer to 30 minutes during weekday rush around 07:30–09:00 and 17:30–19:30. If you’re heading to the interprovincial bus terminal, it’s even closer at about 5–10 minutes, and counter staff know the “Terminal Terrestre” request by name. Late-night rides after 23:00 usually move faster but expect some drivers to prefer cash at those hours.

Most airport-approved taxis are compact sedans with room for two large checked bags plus carry-ons; parties of three with big cruise luggage may need to wait a few extra minutes for a larger car. At the counter, say you have “tres maletas grandes” so they send something that isn’t already trunk-full. Kids’ car seats are generally not provided, so if you need one, bring your own and plan 2–3 extra minutes to install it curbside.

Trips from GYE Authorized Taxi Services into the city run 24/7, but the counters inside Terminal 1 are busiest between 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 when the main domestic and regional flights arrive. If you land during those peaks, sort your fare at the desk before stopping at the ATM or restroom, otherwise you can end up in a slow-moving counter line while cabs sit waiting outside.

One practical tip: keep the printed ticket or receipt with the taxi company’s name and phone number until you’re checked into your hotel; if you leave a bag in the trunk on a US$6–US$8 ride, having that slip raises your odds of getting it back.
