Bus Varies by route

Single tickets from about R$30 connect GRU to nearby cities

Intercity buses at São Paulo–Guarulhos (GRU) run from the airport to cities across São Paulo state and beyond, with one-way fares often starting around R$30–R$40 depending on distance. Services use the official airport bus area near Terminals 2 and 3, so you won’t be wandering the highway shoulder trying to flag something down. Journey time varies a lot by route: a short hop to nearby towns can take 40–60 minutes, while long-haul lines to other states can stretch to 6–8 hours.

Most intercity buses load from the ground transport zones by Terminal 2, with some operators also serving Terminal 3 depending on the route and schedule. You generally buy tickets at each company’s counter inside the terminal or at kiosks near the bus bays. Card payment is widely accepted, and tickets show a specific seat and departure time down to the minute, which matters on peak days like Fridays and Sundays.

Operators publish fixed timetables, often with departures every 60–120 minutes on busier corridors during the day, then thinning out sharply after about 22:00. Some overnight routes still leave GRU after 23:00, especially toward longer-distance cities, but the early morning window from about 01:00 to 05:00 can be very quiet. Plan around Brazilian holiday periods like Carnaval and Christmas, when certain lines add extra buses but sell out days ahead.

Seats on intercity coaches range from standard recliners to more spaced “executivo” or “leito” options, and prices can jump 30–70% between the cheapest and most comfortable categories. Luggage goes in the underfloor hold, tagged with a printed receipt, and carry-ons stay with you in the cabin. Journey time is very route-dependent: a 90 km trip might run 1.5–2 hours in normal traffic, while rainy Friday rush hour can easily add another 30–45 minutes.

Most longer routes include at least one rest-stop of 15–30 minutes at a designated roadside plaza, and departure times for these breaks are usually posted on a sign near the driver’s seat. You’ll want a few reais in coins or small notes for snacks and bathrooms outside GRU, since not every stop takes cards reliably. For anything critical, arrive at the airport bus area 20–30 minutes before your printed departure time and keep a screenshot of your ticket with bus company, platform number, and schedule visible.

  • Practical tip: If your flight lands in Terminal 1, add 10–15 minutes to walk or shuttle to the intercity bus bays by Terminal 2 before your scheduled departure.
