Line 258 from Terminal 2 gets you into São Paulo cheaply
City-run Guarulhos municipal buses stop at Terminals 1, 2 and 3, giving you a low-cost way into São Paulo compared with the R$50+ airport coaches or taxis. Routes run on fixed city fares (think local bus prices, not airport premiums), and ride times swing a lot depending on traffic on the Ayrton Senna and Dutra highways.
From Terminal 2, one key option is the municipal bus toward Tatuapé or Penha metro areas, where you can connect to the red line of the São Paulo Metro for a total fare that usually stays under R$15. Trips into the city can be as short as 45 minutes late at night or well over 90 minutes during weekday rush hours, so build time into your plans.
Buses generally operate from early morning to late evening, with most routes starting around 5:00 and winding down after 23:00, but exact first/last runs vary by line number. Stops at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are signed as “Ônibus Municipal” in Portuguese; follow the bus and taxi pictograms from arrivals to the curbside bays on the ground level.
You pay the municipal fare in cash to the cobrador (fare collector) or via the Bilhete Único card, the same contactless card used on São Paulo buses and metro. Expect standard city-bus comfort: front and rear doors, limited luggage space, and standing passengers during peak periods between 7:00–9:00 and 17:00–19:30 on weekdays. If your checked bag is larger than 23 kg or very bulky, these buses get awkward fast.
There’s no checked-luggage hold on municipal buses at GRU, just overhead grab bars and a small area near the front door. The upside is frequency: some lines pass the terminals every 15–20 minutes in the daytime. At night, headways can stretch to 30–40 minutes, so missing a bus at 22:30 can push your arrival into town back by almost an hour.
One practical tip: before landing, screenshot the specific bus line number and final destination you want, plus the word “Guarulhos” or “Aeroporto,” then match that name on the front of the bus at the curb. Conductors and drivers may not speak English, but showing the screenshot with the line number usually gets a quick yes/no and keeps you off the wrong R$5 ride into the suburbs.
