15–25 minutes to Buchanan Bus Station, all day, every day
The Glasgow Airport Express 500 runs between both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Glasgow Airport and Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre in about 15–25 minutes, traffic depending. Buses run 24 hours a day, so it works for early Ryanair departures from T1 and late easyJet arrivals into T2.
Single tickets usually price higher than the local McGill/M8-style services, but the Express 500 buys you more direct routing, luggage space on board, and fewer intermediate stops between GLA and Buchanan Street. You pay slightly extra for a straight shot into town instead of changing at Paisley Gilmour Street for the train.
Buses pick up just outside the main terminal forecourt at Terminal 1, then swing past Terminal 2 stands a couple of minutes later, so you do not need to walk over to the other terminal if you land in the “wrong” one. Look for the large “500 Airport Express” branding on the front; it is normally hard to miss even on a busy Friday at 17:00.
On board you get standard city-coach seating, overhead luggage racks, and dedicated luggage bays near the front door, which is why solo travellers with a 23 kg checked bag tend to pick this over the cheaper stopping buses. Most coaches used on the 500 route carry USB charging points and basic Wi‑Fi, which is handy if you need to pull up a hotel booking before you reach Buchanan.
How to ride the Glasgow Airport Express 500
- 1. After exiting arrivals at Terminal 1 or 2, follow signs for “Buses/Coaches” and walk to the stand signed “500 Airport Express.”
- 2. Check the front display for “Buchanan Bus Station” so you do not end up on a local stopping service into Paisley or Clydebank instead.
- 3. Buy a ticket from the driver by contactless card or phone wallet; Scottish operators typically accept Visa, Mastercard, and Apple/Google Pay for a single or return to Buchanan.
- 4. Stow big suitcases in the luggage bay near the front doors and keep smaller bags in the overhead rack; this keeps the aisle clear and cuts down dwell time at intermediate stops.
- 5. At Buchanan Bus Station, note your stance number for the return; the 500 usually leaves from one of the stands closest to the main hall and digital departure boards.
Tip: if your flight lands around 08:00–09:00 or 17:00–18:00, give yourself an extra 10–15 minutes in case motorway traffic slows the run into Buchanan, especially on weekdays.
