Most Star Alliance regulars at FCO call this lounge “fine.”
The Star Alliance Lounge sits airside in Terminal 3, serving business-class and status passengers on member airlines headed mainly to non-Schengen gates in the 30s and beyond. It opens roughly 3 hours before the first Star Alliance departure bank most mornings and stays open into the late evening push, so it usually covers the main long-haul waves. If your flight leaves from a remote bus gate in T3, add 10–15 minutes to walk back from the lounge.
Access is limited to Star Alliance business-class tickets and status holders (Gold and above) flying same-day from Terminal 3. No Priority Pass here, and staff generally stick to the one-guest rule for elites. If you’re holding an economy ticket on a Star Alliance airline out of T3 and have no status, this lounge stays off-limits unless your carrier sells you access at check-in, which happens only occasionally.
Seating spreads across several zones with a mix of tables and armchairs, and at peak times before 10:00 and around the 18:00–20:00 bank it can feel short on power outlets. Look for wall seats near the corners for actual plugs; many center seats only have shared floor outlets every few meters. Wi‑Fi comes via the lounge network, not the airport’s, and speed tests hover in the 20–50 Mbps range when the room isn’t full.
Food runs to a small buffet with pasta, cold cuts, cheese, and basic salads that rotate a bit through the day, but reviews mention little change between a 13:00 and 19:00 visit. Expect self-serve soft drinks, a couple of Italian wines, and standard spirits; draft beer may or may not be pouring depending on maintenance that week. If you want a real espresso, the machine by the bar area pulls a decent shot compared with the push-button units near the buffet.
Showers generally stay available, though with only a few rooms you can hit a 20–30 minute wait just after early afternoon transatlantic arrivals. Towels and basic amenities come from the front desk, and staff will usually give you a pager or a time estimate. Figure you need to be done no later than 40 minutes before boarding, since some long-haul gates in the high 40s can be a 10-minute walk from the lounge door.
Practical tip: if you also have access to an airline-branded Star Alliance lounge in Terminal 3, many frequent flyers suggest checking that first and using the Star Alliance Lounge only as a backup when those are full or closed for cleaning.
